IGNITABILITY
A waste exhibits the characteristic of Ignitability (flammability) if it: has a flash point less than 60 C (140 F). is a solid capable of causing fire through friction, absorption of moisture/water or spontaneous chemical change It is an oxidizer as defined in 49 CFR Section 173.151 It is an ignitable compressed gas as defined in 49 CFR section 173.000.
TOXICITY
A waste exhibits the characteristic of Toxicity (e.g. poison) if it: Contains a listed carcinogen at a concentration greater than or equal to 0.001% by weight.
EXAMPLE
WASTE GENERATOR WASTE TYPES
Chemical manufacturers Printing industry Petroleum refining industry Leather products manufacturing Paper industry
Acids and bases Reactive waste Waste inks Solvents Wastewater containing benzene &other hydrocarbons Toluene & benzene Paint waste containing heavy metals
WASTE GENERATOR
WASTE TYPES
OBJECTIVES
To ensure the correct identification and classification of a hazardous waste To prevent hazardous waste entering the environment illegally. To implement cradle-to-grave principles by means of planned waste management strategies
To manage hazardous waste until it is safely disposed of, by setting minimum requirements at crucial points in its life cycle
APPROACHES
WASTE MANAGEMENT(minimizing the impact) Manage , Minimize WASTE PREVENTION(minimizing the volume) Reduce , Recycle
DUMPING OF WASTES AT SEA UNDERGROUND DISPOSAL USUALLY OF RADIOACTIVE WASTES LANDFILLING OF SOLID WASTES INCINERATION OF INFLAMMABLE ORGANIC WASTES
