Introduction
2

Environmental pollution has transcended the

national boundaries and is threatening the global ecosystem.

International environmental concerns such as

stratospheric ozone depletion, the Green house effect, global warming, acid rain and mega disasters such as Bhopal gas tragedy in India have set the stage to address global pollution problems.
The potential effects of global environmental pollution necessitate

global cooperation in order to secure and maintain a liveable global environment .

Global Environmental Issues

3

Green House Effect Rise in Earths Temperature CO2, SO2, hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs), CFCs are major GHGs. Sources natural and anthropogenic (combustion process of fossil fuels, deforestation etc.) Set guidance for implementing Convention - Kyoto Protocol, 1997: Aim was to tighten commitment on reduction of GHGs. reduce emissions (6 target gases) by a total of 5% of 1990 levels by 2008-2012. Also technologies developed in industrialized nations to use energy efficiently could help developing nations in reducing emissions

4

Ozone Layer Depletion Increasing concentration of the synthetic chemicals CFCs & Halons are breaking down the ozone layer More UV rays penetrating the earths surface In early 1970s CFCs were primarily used in aerosol propellant Acid rain Comes from the burning of fossil fuels in industrial area Effects can be felt on rural ecosystem hundreds of miles downwind If effected area is in different country, the economic interest of different nations can come into conflict

Solving/Responding to Ozone Problem

5

Montreal Protocol, 1987

Aim: regulate and phase out Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) Industrial countries cut production and consumption of CFCs to

50% of 1986 levels by 1999

India: Initiatives for Environmental Issues

6

India is emerging both as an economic powerhouse and a global

environmental leader. NRDC is working with key policymakers in India & US to substantially increase bilateral cooperation on climate change. India became a party to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. For sustainable urban development, a number of urban programmes have been initiated by Government of India. Few recent initiatives include National Urban Sanitation Policy, Citywide Slum Up gradation Programme, Sustainable Habitat Mission Green Building, public transportation and solid waste management .

Green Initiatives
7
Environment protection laws in India have become stringent Several companies have installed eco-friendly plants& adopted

practices that will benefit the environment

Launched India's first PVC free and eco-friendly notebook HCL ME 40

Green fuels (petrol and diesel) conforming to Euro-III emission norms have

been introduced in 13 cities/states. All Indian Oil refineries fully comply with the prescribed environmental standards

Lenovo products have earned the ENERGY STAR 5.0 rating that means you can expect to cut your computing energy bill by as much as 60%.
