Gulayan: Kadamay Ka!

an Income Generating Project of Technology and Livelihood Education (Agriculture) Students of the Masbate National Comprehensive High School through the Gulayan sa Paaralan. It is located at the MNCHS Main Campus, corner Airport Road and Medina Extension with an area of about 50 square meter. Different varieties of leafy, fruit and root vegetables are grown for the purpose of enhancing learning among students regarding the scientific as well as natural or organic way of raising vegetables.

This

also showcase small scale food production model were students, teachers, employees, parents and the public can replicate in their own backyard. Products from this project provides fresh, organic vegetables for the school canteen, some are sold to teachers, employees and the public were the generated income supports two indigent fourth year students of section Libra, helping them financing their studies.

Land

Preparation:

cleaning

and clearing the area from dirts, stones, twig, etc. lay-outing of garden plots, construction of drainage canal.

Planting:
Pechay, eggplant, pepper with small seeds are grown first in the sand boxes and then transplanted at the right time following the correct distances while okra, ginger, green onions, legumes were directly planted on a prepared area.

Care of Plants:
Watering of plants, periodic cultivation of soil to control weeds, application of organic fertilizer and preparation and control of pests and diseases had been performed during the operation.

Harvesting/Marketing: Vegetables were harvested early in the morning to prolong freshness and brought to the school canteen immediately and some are sold to teachers and employees of the school.

Perform garden activities (Watering, weeding, prevention and control of pests and diseases, harvesting

Inputs Garden tools (old garden tools of the school were used in the operation of the project)

Operating Expenses: Planting materials ( some seeds are provided by the Department of Agriculture, and some from the GSP seed bank) Organic fertilizer: ( compost and other organic fertilizers used were produced by students from garden waste.
