Production Management
It involves all the activity which converts input into output.

i.e. raw material to finished product. For example :

- identification raw material - knowledge of process - installation of equipments - quantities to produced - specification of process - quality of product - location of facility - technology necessary to be deployed - recruitment of workforce & their training - Maintenance of information system

Integrated production management

The various functions involved in production involves :

Procurement of raw material Moving them for transformation Train & deploy workforce Implement procedure for loading of machines Maintain inventory ( JIT & lean manufacturing) Maintenance of machines Method of inspection & packaging Planning of activity both for long and short term

Production planning & control

It starts with the findings of the marketing department by

considering customers demand. It involves managing various inputs like raw material, machinery, sub contracting, work force, storage space. Make or buy decision depends on (1) matching demand (2) level capacity. In matching demand production capacity is adjusted to match the forecasted demand by varying the level of work force. In level capacity method production capacity is held constant at optimum level . The varying demand can be met by maintaining inventory, overtime, backlog or sub contracting.

Production planning function :

(1) Estimating : manpower requirement, machine capacity,

materials are estimated to meet planned targets. (2) Routing : It is the process of determining the sequence of operations and tackles the problem of moving the materials (3) Scheduling : It involves fixing the priorities of various jobs in pre set time, in order to effective utilization of labour time.

Production control function :

(1) Dispatching : It involves moving materials from work

centre to work centre to meet the requirement of routing and scheduling. (2) Expediting : It ensures that production process is cleared of constraints and workflow is smooth.

Material control and handling :

- Material control involves procurement, storage and issuance of material for manufacturing the products - imp points to be considered are selection of suppliers, quantities to be ordered, fixation of price, terms of delivery. - Material handling refers to the activities that are conducted to provide suitable and sufficient space for material before starting usage.
