How We Express Ourselves

Transdisciplinary Learning
Mathematics Shape and Space: Students will learn about 2D and 3D shapes. They will be able to classify them, identify them and use specific vocabulary to describe their properties. Language Arts Reading: Students will learn the reading strategy of visualization to help them understand poetry and other texts. Writing: Students will explore poetry and inquire into different poetry features. They will then use these when writing their own poems. Viewing and Presenting and Listening and Speaking: Responding and giving feedback to presentations as well as learning to use intonation, volume, pace and body language to communicate ideas. Music: Students will explore musical works inspired by nature from different composers, times and places. They will respond to nature by creating music ideas and find ways to notate their ideas. Original music will be recorded and performed. Art: Students learn about different artists and how they use nature as a source of inspiration. They will also learn different techniques to create sculptures and paintings.

Central Idea
Nature can inspire people to express their creativity.

Disciplinary Learning
Mathematics Knowledge: Place value Basic Facts Order and sequence Patterns Strategy: Addition and Subtraction Multiplication and Division Language Arts Word Study: Students continue to learn word patterns to develop their spelling skills. Grammar: Students will keep developing an understanding of sentence structure as well as punctuation.

Knowledge
Students respond to their own and other artists works and processes. Students will demonstrate knowledge of different forms of expression that will allow them to be creative as they explore personal inspirations, feelings, beliefs and values.

Communication: Viewing and Presenting Students understand the way in which different forms of expression can be used to communicate feelings, ideas, beliefs and values. Thinking: Students will use and apply learned concepts to create and design inspirational pieces.
