Engineering - The application of scientific and mathematical principles to practical ends such as the design, manufacture, and operation of efficient and economical structures, machines, processes, and systems
Engineering is the discipline, art, skill and profession of acquiring and applying scientific, mathematical, economic, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design and build structures, machines, devices, systems, materials and processes
The American Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD, the predecessor of ABET)[1] has defined "engineering" as: the creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behaviour under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and property
The conceptualization of role comes from two directions: one from within the engineering profession and the other from without.
The need for professional ethics as an integral part of the engineering curricula The education and training of engineers must inculcate professional behaviours and attitudes The Code of Ethics for Engineers has set forth the responsibilities of engineers to the public, to the clients and to the fellow engineers
There will be rapid accumulation of new knowledge, including those developed in the last decades of the outgoing millenium. Advances in information technology will have a continuing strong influence on the development and growth in engineering education.
The concepts of globalization and sustainable development will continue to have implications on industry and thus, on engineering education; there will be growing complexity of social, economic and technical interrelationships.
Societys needs in the decades ahead will call for engineering and talent on a greater scale; there will be increasing levels of technical demands which may lead to engineering programs with more specialization at the undergraduate level
There will be a need for flexibility and variety in engineering education for more effectiveness in responding to the varying needs at the regional and national levels The needs of the future will require the fullest possible integration of research with the educational purpose of engineering colleges
There will be an increasing need for techniques in analyzing various options to achieve an objective function in the light of limiting resources and increasing constraints There will be an increasing demand for continuing studies of high quality
Mechanical engineering is the application of physical principles to the creation of useful devices, objects and machines. Mechanical engineers use principles such as heat, force, and the conservation of mass and energy to analyze static and dynamic physical systems, in contributing to the design of things such as automobiles, aircraft, and other vehicles, heating and cooling systems, household appliances, industrial equipment and machinery, weapons systems, etc. Mechanical engineers often create simulations of the operation of objects, as well as the manufacturing processes to be used, in order to optimize performance, cost effectiveness, and energy efficiencies, before settling on a particular design
