INTRODUCTION:
1. Adjective phrases are defined as phrases in which an adjective functions as the head of the phrase.

Example:
1. 2. The pizza is very spicy but quite small . People angry with the high prices is Tim.

STRUCTURE
Pre-modification + HEAD + Adj. Complement
Modifying, describing or qualifying constituents which precede the head
An Adj or participle serving as the focus of the Phrase Completes the meaning implied by the head

FUNCTION
1. They may be attributive (appearing inside a noun phrase)

Ex: The man covered with sweat, trudged his way home.
2.They are predicative (appearing after a linking verb)

Ex: The pizza is very spicy but quite small.

Example: 1. I went for a walk in the dark woods. 2. The baby crawled under the table.

FORM ADJECTIVE PHRASE


Participial Phrases with Adjective Function
Begins with a participle and includes the object of the participial or other words that are connected to the noun by the participle

*Present participial _ing form


The little girl, crying loudly, stepped in front of the crowd

*Past participial _ed form


No one bothered to listen to the man dressed in shabby clothes

REDUCING AN ADJ.CLAUSE TO AN ADJ. PHRASE


1.Verb TO BE: Eliminate the subject and the be-verb Clause: Ms Harrison who is the vice president of the company was promoted. Phrase: Ms Harrison vice president of the company was promoted. Clause: The car that was stolen from Tom was Toyota Phrase: The car stolen from Tom was Toyota 2. If there is no Be verb, eliminate the subject and change the verb to Ing

Clause: The woman who teaches Psychology was educated at Yale Phrase: The woman teaching Psychology was educated at Yale

Exercise 1: Reduce the adjective clauses into adjective phrases


1. I know the student who is sitting in the front row of the theater. _______________________________________________________________ _________________ 2. Exercise 2: Combine the two sentences into one, using the second as the adjective phrase. Remember to place the adjective phrase immediately after the noun it describes.
