ASSESSING LEARNING

ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING TASK FOR LANGUAGE INSTRUCTORS IS FINDING EFFECTIVE WAYS TO DETERMINE WHAT AND HOW MUCH THEIR CLIENTS ARE ACTUALLY LEARNING

ASSESSMENT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF TEACHING PROCESS

1.Traditional tests 2.Summative and formative assessment 3.Alternative assessment 4.Peer Assessment Self-assessment

ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES

TRADITIONAL PENCIL AND PAPER TESTS

It can be helpful as measures of students knowledge of language forms and their listening and reading comprehension ability. It is not adequate to measure many types of learning. A way of assessing students and this type of structure limits the awareness for individualized learning and the level of knowledge with students being taught only what they need to know to pass the test

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
It is not wise to reserve assessment only at the end of the grading.

* prelim
*midterm *final

Rates the student in relation to an external standard of correctness

It is an approach taken by most traditional and standardized tests

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
o Takes place on an going basis as instruction is proceeding

o Rates the student in terms of functional ability to communicate

o Helps students recognize ways of improving their learning o It is an approach taken by alternative assessment methods

ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT
Consists in looking directly in to the performance that we value Uses activities that reveal what students can do with language, emphasizing their strengths instead of their weaknesses It is performance based it is also graded, it helps teachers emphasize that the point of language learning is communication for meaningful purposes Work well in learner- centered classroom because they are based on the idea that the students can evaluate their own learning and learn from the evaluation process

FEATURES OF ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT

Assessment is based on authentic tasks that demonstrate learners ability to accomplish communication goals
Instructors and learners focus on communication, not on right and wrong answers Learners help to set criteria for successful completion of communication tasks Learners have opportunities to assess themselves and their peers

DESIGNING TASKS FOR ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT

The following criteria define authentic assessment activities:
1.Built around topics or issues of interest to the student 2. Replicate real- world communication 3. Involve multi-stage tasks and real problems 4. Require learners to produce a quality product 5. Their evaluation criteria and standards are known to the students

6. Involve interaction between assessor and person assessed

7. Allow for self-evaluation and self- correction as they proceed

PEER ASSESSMENT
o A team is a small group of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and an approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.

SELF ASSESSMENT

Encourages students to become independent learners and can increase their motivation

Students can become better language learners when they engage in deliberate thought

THE SUCCESSFUL USE OF STUDENT SELF ASSESSMENT DEPENDS ON THREE KEY ELEMENTS

A.Goal Setting
B.Guided practice with assessment tools C.Portfolios

1. GOAL SETTING
Essential because students can evaluate their progress more clearly Students motivation to learn increases when they have welldefined, therefore relevant, learning goals

2. GUIDED PRACTICE WITH ASSESSMENT TOOLS

They need to be taught strategies for self monitoring and self assessment It can help students to be aware of their learning

PORTFOLIOS
Emphasizes evaluation of students progress, processes, and performance over time. These are purposeful, organized, systematic collections of student work that tell the story of a students efforts, progress and achievement in specific areas. It is a joint process for instructor and student

TWO BASIC TYPES OF PORTFOLIO

Process portfolio
Serves the purpose of classroom-level assessment It is often reflects formative assessment

Product portfolio
It is intended for a major evaluation of some sort and is often accompanied by an oral presentation It is more summative in nature
