Common Core Math in Middle School

March 24, 2014 Sunnyvale School District

Agenda Overview
The New Common Core Standards and how they have changed math at the middle school New curriculum for middle school math Preparing students for the Smarter Balanced Assessment, SAT and beyond Math Pathways to High School Courses

Common Core Shifts in Math Focus, Coherence and Rigor

1. Focus: More time on fewer topics 2-3 topics focused on deeply in each grade 2. Coherence: Concepts logically connected from one grade to the next and linked to other major topics within the grade 3. Rigor: Fluency with arithmetic, application of knowledge to real world situations, and deep understanding of mathematical concepts
Common Core State Standards

Assessment Claims: What Students Must be Able to Do

Claim #1 - Students can explain and apply mathematical concepts and carry out mathematical procedures with precision and fluency. Claim #2 - Students can frame and solve a range of complex problems in pure and applied mathematics. Claim #3 - Students can clearly and precisely construct viable arguments to support their own reasoning and to critique the reasoning of others. Claim #4 - Students can analyze complex, real-world scenarios and can use mathematical models to interpret and solve problems.

How do the CST and SBA Test Items Differ?

CST5th Grade
Students perform calculations and solve problems involving addition, subtraction, and simple multiplication and division of fractions and decimals SB Assessment 5th Grade Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to the hundredths using concrete models or drawings, and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used

COMPARE: Sample CST Item Grade 6

Algebra and Functions Ellen had some change in her pocket. Afterher friend gave her $0.45, Ellen had $1.35altogether. Which equation can she use tofind the original amount of money, m, shehad in her pocket? A m+0.45=1.35 B 1.35=m-0.45 C m=1.35x0.45 D m+1.35=0.45

Sample SBA Item: Grade 6

Grade 7 Sample Item: Integers

Students drag and drop expressions onto the number line

Sample SBA Item: Grade 8

Common Core = Increased Depth of Knowledge

Depth of Knowledge (DOK)

Low-Cognitive Demand
Level 1: Recalling and Recognizing
Student is able to recall routine facts of knowledge and can recognize shape, symbols, attributes and other qualities.

Level 2: Using Procedures

Student uses or applies procedures and techniques to arrive at solutions or answers.

Depth of Knowledge (DOK)

High-Cognitive Demand Level 3: Explaining and Concluding
Student reasons and derives conclusions. Student explains reasoning and processes. Student communicates procedures and findings.

Level 4: Making Connections, Extending and Justifying

Student makes connections between different concepts and strands of mathematics. Extends and builds on knowledge to a situation to arrive at a conclusion. Students use reason and logic to prove and justify conclusions.

The Smarter Balanced Assessments are built off the MARS. MARS assess conceptual understanding of mathematics. Only 44.8% of 8th grade Geometry students in Silicon Valley Math Initiative 2012 have a deep understanding of the math.

SAT ~ Reading & Writing

No longer will it be good enough to focus on tricks and trying to eliminate answer choices. We are not interested in students just picking an answer, but justifying their answers. David Coleman, President College Board

The NEW SAT Math

there will be three areas of focus: problem solving and data analysis,
1. ratios and percentages and proportional reasoning used to solve problems in the real world; 2. the heart of algebra, which will test how well students can work with linear equations; 3. what will be called the passport to advanced math, which will focus on the students familiarity with complex equations or functions and their applications in science and social science.
David Coleman, President College Board, NY Times March 9, 2014

In Response to the SAT Changes . .

What this is is a clear message that good hard work is going to pay off and achievement is going to pay off. This is one of the most significant developments that I have seen in the 40-plus years that Ive been working in admissions in higher education.
William Fitzsimmons, dean of admissions and financial aid at Harvard

Common Core Middle School Math

The CCSS are more rigorous than the CA standards

Math 8

The CCSS math content does not spiral--so students cannot skip over years

Math 7
Math 6

CCSSM 8th Grade = HS Standards

Math 8 CCSS contains over half of the standards previously in Algebra 1 Algebra 1 now contains standards that were previously in Algebra 2

CCSS Math 8

Acceleration in middle school now means completing Common Core Algebra 1

It is incorrect to say that algebra isn't covered until high school. There is a great deal of algebra in the 8th grade standards. For example, students in grade 8 are expected to solve two simultaneous equations with two unknowns. I don't see a lack of rigor there.

Jason Zimba co-Author CCSSM

The standards actually invest heavily in algebra because of the way they focus so strongly on the prerequisites for algebra in the elementary grades.

Current Pathways
Start 2013-16
Math 6 Common Core SBA in 7th

The acceleration decision moved from after 5th to after 6th. Students recommended for acceleration are offered a pathway that compacts CCSS Math 7, 8 and Algebra

Math 7 Common Core Compacted Math 7 & 8/

Math 8 Common Core

Compacted Math /8 & Algebra

9th Grade: Students are placed in Common Core Algebra I or Geometry or Algebra 2 based on high school placement criteria

What about Geometry?

Possible scenarios for 2015-16 school year: Extended learning time in the 8th grade year A 2 period block of math in the 8th grade year (extended time would take the place of an elective) FUHSD 6-Week Summer Geometry after 8th grade

Addressing the Needs of all Learners

Flexible Grouping Blended Learning Teacher Specialization Math Enrichment Math Intervention Acceleration Pathways

Next Steps
Exploring additional options for 6th graders
Multiple access options Operational feasibility Impact on other classes
