Swechha started in 2000 as a young peoples campaign to raise awareness about pollution in the River Yamuna. Our aim then was to bring awareness in people and make them understand various things that could be done differently and that the river neednt be recognized as the black body of water we saw running through the city of Delhi. Within a few months, the campaign was able to mobilise more than 500 volunteers. As support grew, we were able to register as an NGO in 2001. Our work included street plays, photo exhibitions, film screenings, workshops and public meetings in various schools and colleges. We then developed a wider range of programs focusing on different environmental issues and on promoting active citizenship among the youth. Once established as an NGO, we wanted to reach out to more people and find new ways to mobilise volunteers. An opportunity arose through one of our partners - United Nations Volunteers (UNV), an initiative of the UNDP. Due to our partnership with UNV we were actively involved in the International Year of Volunteers (IYV) and worked closely with them on World Volunteer Day, every year. A wide range of media coverage has also helped us increase our outreach (see our In the News section).
