RESPIMAT dry inhaler technology

What is Respimat Soft Mist Inhaler?

Respimat soft mist inhaler (SMI) is propellent Free inhaler by Boehringer Ingelheim as innovative approach to inhalation therapy. Respimat soft mist inhaler helps to improve lung disposition is easy to use and preferred by patients than conventional MDI and DPIs

Why respimat inhaler useful??? Benefits of respimat SMI innhaler Results

Unique soft mist resulting in decreased in Less impaction in the oropharynx Cloud velocity decreased cloud velocity*

Unique soft mist resulting in increased cloud duration Increased lung deposition

Simplifies co-ordination of activation with inspiration Better drug targeting, allowing reduction of the nominal dose Less impact on the environment Simple for the patient Greater amount of respirable particles

Propellant-free Easy to use * High fine particle fraction

Key features of Respimat soft mist inhaler

1) High Fine-Particle Fraction : The RESPIMAT inhaler generates a medication cloud with a high fine-particle fraction (FPF). The size of drug particles is a key factor in ensuring penetration of the medication into lungs. 2) Long Cloud Duration: The RESPIMAT inhaler has demonstrated a longer cloud duration than pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) RESPIMAT inhaler mean cloud duration: 1.5 seconds pMDI cloud duration: 0.15 to 0.36 seconds 3) Slow-Moving Aerosol Cloud : The RESPIMAT inhaler has demonstrated a slower cloud velocity (mean 0.8 m/sec) relative to pMDIs (range 2.0 m/sec to 8.4 m/sec). 4) Consistent Drug Dose : The RESPIMAT inhaler delivers a consistent drug dose throughout the life span of the cartridge. 5) Higher Lung Deposition : achieve high therapeutic effect compared with other types of inhalers.

No Propellant :

The RESPIMAT inhaler contains no chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). This eliminates the problems associated with the volatile propellants in pMDIs.
Multidose Canister :

The RESPIMAT inhaler cartridge delivers 120 metered actuations after preparation and priming for first-time use. The RESPIMAT inhaler includes a dose indicator combined with a locking mechanism that engages when the dose indicator has reached the end of the scale (after 120 actuations).

HOW IT WORKS?
A 180 twist of the device base compresses the spring. This draws a metered dose of drug solution through the capillary tube to the dosing chamber When the dose release button is pressed, the power from the spring moves the capillary tube into the dosing chamber The drug solution is forced through the uniblock The uniblock produces two fine jets of liquid that converge at a selected angle and then collide. The collision aerolizes the liquid to form a slow-moving cloud of inhalable particles, the Soft Mist

Storage conditions for Respimat inhaler

Store RESPIMAT inhaler at Room Temperature between 59F to 86F (15C to 30C). Do not freeze your RESPIMAT cartridge and inhaler.

Marketed formulations:
Combivent respimat inhaler: It contains ipratonium and albuterol as
two bronchodilators for treatment of bronchitis and ephysema. Dosing:2 inhalations 4 times daily.

Spiriva respimat inhaler: It contains tiotripium (long acting

muscarinic receptor antagonist) 2.5 micrograms per actuation.it is used for COPD diseases.

Advantages:
No propellant Slow moving medicament cloud Consistent drug dose Cloud with high particle fraction Dose indicator Higher lung disposition than pMDIs

Disadvantages
Not available in most countries. Not breath actuated.

Conclusion:
Respimat inhaler is efficient technology as pulmonary drug delivery system . It has higher lung disposition of drug . No propellants are used so, it is environmental friendly
