Tourism policy defined as ; set of regulations, rules, guidelines, directives with the object of promoting and developing tourism. It also helps to develop a sustainable strategy for bringing sustainable development of tourism.
Position tourism as a major engine of economic growth; Harness the direct and multiplier effects of tourism for employment generation, economic development and providing impetus to rural tourism; Focus on domestic tourism as a major driver of tourism growth. Position India as a global brand to take advantage of the burgeoning global travel trade and the vast untapped potential of India as a destination;
Ensure that the tourist to India gets physically invigorated, mentally rejuvenated, culturally enriched, spiritually elevated and feel India from within. Able to maximize the productivity of India's natural, human , cultural and technical resources and are sustainable development
The policy takes into consideration seven keys that will provide the thrust to tourism development . These are :

CREATION OF WORLD- CLASS INFRASTRUCTURE The infrastructure ranges from ports of entry, to modes of transport to destinations, to urban infrastructure supporting tourism facilities such as access roads, power electricity, water supply, sewage etc. STRATEGIES FOR EFFECTIVE MARKETING:
To effectively compete in tourism markets India will have to shift its current traditional marketing approach to one that is more aggressive and competitive
In the international market India requires a positioning statement that captures the essence of its tourism product to convey an image of the product to a potential consumer and which will become brand India. For eg: Amazing Thailand, Malaysia, truly Asia.
Tourism laws
A traveler
who is also a tourist is governed by the law and regulations in force in the country he visits. Passport visas laws: It is extremly important for all the visitors abroad to posses valid passport issued by their respective countries before they Indian territory. Through land, sea, air, route.
Visa is an essential requirement for all people of nationalities for entering india. Maximum duration of visa are issued is 180 days. Special permits: In case of border states and two groups of islands (Andaman& lakshwadeep) visitors require special entry permit. This permit is valid for only 15 days.
Economic regulations
Currency: tourists are not allowed to bring Indian currency into the country or out of the country. On arrival visitors should declare all foreign currency above $ 1000. Income tax: if a person not domiciled in india intension to stay for more than 120days, and income tax clearence certificate is required in order to leave in country.
Health regulation
Travelers may be concerned not only with medical attention to specific diseases at the destinations but also for pre-existing health problems. Provision of medical attention to travelers has therefore been a key issue of debate.
