Objective
To design an MTBE plant that produces 100,000 tons of MTBE per year. MTBE is a gasoline additive. The reaction is between isobutene and methanol as follows: (CH3)2C=CH2 + CH3OH (CH3)3C-O-CH3

Calculations:
To calculate the Cost of Operating Labor (COL):
N=4 vessel + 3 tower + 5 heat exchanger + 4 pumps = 16 NOL = (6.9 +1.71P2 +0.23Nnp)0.5 = (6.29 +31.7*0 +0.23*16)0.5 = 3.16 op/shift NOP = (4.5) shift/day * NOL =4.5 * 3.16= 14.22 14op/day 52900$ = cost of labor (per operator/year) COL = NOP * cost of labor = 14 * 52900$ = $740600/year

To calculate the Cost of Manufacture (COM) without depreciation: COMd= 1.23(CRM + CWT + CUT) +2.73 COL + 0.180 FCI
= 1.23(74932776 + 0 + 15222900) +2.73*740600 +0.180*619000 =$113* 10^6

To calculate the production cost of MTBE:

Cost of MTBE = COMd/ production rate = $113* 10^6 / 1*10^8kg/year =1.13 $/kg

HAZOP
What is it Its purpose Concept Key words

procedure offering potential to improve the safety, reliability and operability of process plants by recognizing and eliminating potential problems when designing

An identifying technique leading methodically to most potential and detectable deviations which could conceivably arise in the course of normal operating routine

1. Taking description of a process, questioning every part of it to establish the deviations 2. Assessment is made. 3. Action is then taken.
