conversations which are designed and conducted to enhance someones well being or performance.

Coaching is about expanding


peoples capacity to create the desired future. It is NOT TELLING PEOPLE WHAT TO DO, but ASKING THEM to examine the thinking behind what theyre doing so it is consistent with their goals.
Coaching is about giving people the gift of your presence, asking questions, listening.

Helping someone expand and apply skills, knowledge and abilities, by Teaching Motivating Encouraging Setting Goals

Active Listening is the simple but solid/elegant foundation of effective coaching.

Coaching situations
Assigning a new challenging task; reviewing results. Determining with an employee his/her training needs. Showing an employee how to perform a task. Discussing a plan for employee career advancement. Discussing poor employee performance.

Process of coaching
Identify the problem Availability of the resources (find) Establish the right atmosphere and adopt a helping attitude and relationship Exercise appropriate coaching skills Agree the plan

Do's in coaching
Allow employee to express their feelings without hesitation Remain calm and stable Listen and identify precipitating factors as the employee tell their experience. Show the concern for the problem

Encourage the employee to tell his /her problem Acknowledge and reward any positive behavior of the employee Deal with the immediate situations rather than the future If needed refer the employee to the right place

Coaching is not.
Giving advice Counseling Fixing people Doing it for them Policing Just telling or Directing someone but empowering them

Coaching is not
A close personal relationship A replacement for supervision
