What is aesthetic development?


S Aesthetic development deals with being artistic, learning

to appreciate art and beauty, and being able to create art in any way that is pleasing.
S Aesthetic development can be encouraged early on in

life, even during infancy.


S Aesthetic experiences emphasize doing things for the

pure joy of it. (Mayesky, 2009)


S Aesthetic development takes place in secure settings free

of competition and adult judgment. (Mayesky, 2009)

S Young children benefit from aesthetic

experiences.
S They love nature and enjoy creating, looking at,

and talking about art.


S They express their feelings and ideas through

language, song, expressive movement, music, and dance.

S Three basic ways to provide young children

developmentally appropriate aesthetic experiences in the early childhood (Golbert & Taunton, 1992): S Provide many opportunities to create art S Provide many opportunities to look at and talk about art S Help children become aware of art in their everyday lives

How songs & poetry can be used to encourage aesthetic development?


S Children can continuously find beauty and wonder in their

world through songs and poetry.


S Play instruments, singing, creating and listening to the

songs
S Moving rhythmically and expressively while singing S A range of role play experiences including small world and

block play
S Puppets and props

S Teaches them to be creative. Creativity helps

children be aware of: S The world around them S Their own creative and artistic competences
S Allows children to indirectly integrate music and

dance in the lesson learnt.
