Drugs? Ermigard!

Problem!
Your patient, Bobby Moody has been diagnosed with
BPAD
They are currently in the middle of a manic episode
Which drug should they take?
Lithium or Wellbutrin (bupropion)?
If You Chose Lithium .. .
Good job!
Lithium enhances the
reuptake of Catacholamines
and calms active nerves
Your patient is soon feeling
MUCH better (but will need
monitoring)
If You Chose Wellbutrin.
. .
Bad news! Wellbutrin slows
reuptake of seratonin, and
causes a flood of
neurotransmitters. This
causes Bobby to feel
AWESOME. Unfortunately,
this is due to an increase in
mania, and soon news comes
in that he has left his family
and spent the weekend in
Atlantic City gambling.
Problem. . .
Your patient, Ima Sioux has a breast carcinoma.
Which is a better drug for treating this disease?
Methotrexate or Neomycin?
If You Chose
Methotrexate. . .
Great choice!
Methotrexate is an antimetabolite
that inhibits DNA synthesis
thereby interfering with cell
division of cancerous cells. When
properly monitored for a
therapeutic range, this drug is
useful in battling this kind of
carcinoma.
If You Chose Neomycin.
. .
You may have saved Ima a sniffle,
because Neomycin is an antibiotic
(note the mycin in the name).
Unfortunately, this does little to
help her real problem. Ima (and her
lawyers) are not amused.
Problem
Your patient, Ida Feelgood, has just had a liver
transplant. She is in danger of rejection. What is the
better choice for treating this concern?
Digoxin or Cyclosporine?
If you Chose Digoxin
Being improperly medicated is not the only thing raising Idas
pulse. You have prescribed a medication used to restore force
to cardiac contractions. The drug is doing nothing to help Ida
accept the new organ. Thankfully, someone catches the error,
and a year later Ida is recovering nicely in Tahiti on your dime.
If You Chose
Cyclosporine. . .
Good choice! This drug is an
immunosuppressant. This one
reduces T-Cell activation, and
is acceptable for use in
suppressing immune rejection
of hepatic transplants. Idas
transplant is a success, and in
time, she happily resumes her
life
Problem
Your Patient, Skip Beats suffers from ventricular
arrhythmia. Which drug intervention is the best
choice?
Lidocaine or Chloramphenicol?

If You Chose Lidocaine
Well Done! Lidocaine is the drug of choice for
treating this kind of cardiac ailment. The drug is very
beneficial, and Skips prognosis has improved!
If You Chose
Chloramphenicol. . .
OuchIts bad practice to
treat cardiac issues with
bactericidal agents. Skip
doesnt see the use (or
humor) in inhibiting
bacterial protein synthesis
at the moment, and after
an ugly (and damaging)
lawsuit, you decide youre
better cut out for a
different kind of work.
Problem
Your Patient, Dawn Inderdumps is prone to bouts of
depression but NOT due to BPAD. Which is a better
drug for her?
Phenobarbital or Fluoxetine?
If You Chose
Phenobarbital. . .
No Bueno. Dawn is clinically
depressed, not epileptic.
Although some antiepileptics
can be used to tread BPAD,
this is not generally true of
depression not of BPAD
origin. Worse, Phenobarbital
can cause intoxication and
CNS depression not the
outcome of choice for
someone already struggling
to keep up with life. Dawn
does not improve, and ends
up in a stress unit where her
doctors are more careful with
her prescriptions. . .
If You Chose Fluoxetine.
. .
Dawn is so happy you paid
attention to her symptoms.
Actually, for the first time in
a long while, Dawn is happy
about lots of things! Shes
even getting married this
summer. Her new name will
be Dawn Sweddit.
