1. ORTHODONTIST :

develop without treatment. The following diagnostic procedures will
be performed :

1. A full medical and dental health history

3. X-rays of the teeth and jaw

WHEN CAN
ORTHODONTIC
TREATMENT START?

Some of the most common teeth problems requiring orthodontic treatment are listed below.
protruding upper front teeth one of the most common reasons for needing orthodontic
treatment, particularly as the teeth may be more prone to damage during falls or contact
sports
crowding people with narrow jaws often lack enough space for their teeth, resulting in
crowding
impacted teeth the adult teeth may not come through as they grow in the wrong
position
Overbite
asymmetrical teeth in some people, the centre of their upper and lower teeth do not
match, giving their teeth an asymmetrical or crooked appearance
deep bite the upper teeth cover the lower teeth too much
reverse bite the upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth

Orthodontics also includes cosmetic dentistry; when the patient's aim is
to improve his/her appearance.

An orthodontist uses a range of medical dental devices, including
headgears, plates, braces, etc. to help in:
1. Closing wide gaps between the teeth
2. Making sure the tips of the teeth are aligned
3. Straightening crooked teeth
4. To improve speech or eating (oral function)
5. To improve the long-term health of gums and teeth
6. To prevent long-term excessive wear or trauma (of the teeth)
7. Treating an improper bite

Only your dentist or orthodontist can determine
whether you can benefit from orthodontics. Based on
diagnostic tools that include a full medical and dental health
history, a clinical exam, plaster models of your teeth, and
special X-rays and photographs, an orthodontist or dentist
can decide whether orthodontics are recommended, and
develop a treatment plan that's right for you.

When Can Orthodontic Treatment Start ?

Treatment will not usually commence until the child is about 12
or 13 years old; when the adult teeth have come through and
developed fully. In some cases treatment may start a couple of years
later if teeth problems had not become noticeable beforehand.

Children with a cleft lip and palate may require orthodontic
treatment before their adult teeth have developed completely.
