Misunderstanding between two managers
due to lack of communication
We are here in our case-study, specifically
discussing the GRAPEVINE
COMMUNICATION in an organization.
To learn of something informally and
unofficially by means of gossip and rumor.
Informal vehicle through which messages
flow throughout the organization.
The article Heading off a Permanent Misunderstanding is about a
misunderstanding between two managers at Alton
Products. Mindy Martin is up for a promotion which would have
her move to Topeka. She has rose fast through the company and is
well qualified for the position in Topeka. Her getting the job partly
relays on the recommendation of Al Sharp another manager who
Martin has become friendly with. Martin ends up not getting the
promotion while another manager Walter Murdoch does. Martin is
very unhappy about the end result and believes that Sharp had
given her a poor review. For about a month Martin avoids Sharp and
is generally unpleasant towards him.
This tension comes to a head when Martin and Sharps
superior William Attridge calls them both in for a meeting to
resolve the problem.
At first the two do not speak, until Martin finally says Al
seems more interested in dealing with Walter Murdoch." At
this Sharp is speechless.
Attridge intervenes and explains to Martin that Sharp gave
her an excellent review and that he felt sticking her in Topeka
would be a waste.
After this meeting Martin and Sharp resolved their
problem and were able to once again be friendly.
If Attridge had not intervened then I feel the
problem may not have been resolved.
Although Attridge went through it in a dangerous
way and perhaps should have had two separate
meetings with Martin and Sharp to find out what
the problem was.
It ended up working out after all so it was a
positive solution. These misunderstanding
happen often in the workplace and are easily
resolved with proper communication.


Proper communication in the workplace is essential and
helps to improve morale, increase efficiency and create
healthy working relationships.
A major benefit of good communication within the
workplace is that it may very likely lead to an
improvement in office morale.
When employers, directors and managers are able to
regularly provide effective communication this in turn will
lead to an increase in efficiency within the workplace
There is nothing like poor communication to
trigger office rumours, gossip and conflict as well
as distrust among colleagues, managers and
employers.
Effective communication skills are a key aspect of
being able to succeed within the workplace
environment.
CONCLUSIONN
The sources of misunderstandings are very
common in every organization. There are
always presumptions made about someone
especially between employees and
managers. Talking things about problems
are very helpful.
