Historical Background of RSMML
5
Project details.
- One of the most developed mechanised open
cast mines of India .

- JIP have been accorded EC vide letter No. J-
11015/6/94-IA(II)(M)dt.17.11.97 due to
proposal for enhancement in production
fresh EC is required.
- JIP is only producer of high grade rock
phosphate in the country catering to 68%
of the indigenous rock demand for SSP
fertilizer in India.
6
Company profile
- The Integrated Beneficiation Plant located at
Jhamarkotra, Udaipur produces high grade rock
phosphate concentrate, utilizing low grade Rock
Phosphate. The technology used for beneficiation is
unique and has been commercially exploited for the first
time in the world. for similar type of dolomitic ores
7
Project details
- Rajphos, a direct application phosphatic fertilizer,
has become the most effective contributor of
phosphate nutrient for the acidic soils of Southern
and North-Eastern states.
- 35% country requirement for raw material for
phosphate fertilizer is being meet out by Indigenous
source out of which Jhamarkotra contribute 85% of
it.
- Operation of 3.8 MW captive power generation plant
based on the latest technology.
- Mining of deferent grade rock phosphate&
beneficiations of low grade ore to high grade rock
phosphate (+34% ).
- R&D of low cost environmental friendly organic
fertilizer called PROM.
- Company has established a ETP by investing 237 lacs
for treatment of effluent generated from IBP.
8
- Geological reserves as on 1.4.03
- Proved 44.983 millions tons.
- Indicated 16.411 millions tones .
- Mineable 24.310 millions tones .
- Land use of the mining lease area as on 1.4.06.
- Agriculture 134 .070hac.
- Forest Nil
- Waste land 245.269 hac.
- Grazing land 113.430 hac .
- Surface water bodies Nil .
- Other (road ,green belt ) 53.92 hac.
- Current working (quarry , OB dump, mineral stock yard ,
infrastructure 823.68 hac
- Total 1370.369 hacs.

RSMML performance Highlights
Contd.
- Pioneered power generation from Wind Energy
Farms located at Jaisalmer. The 15 MW power
project in three phases has become a symbol of
success in renewable energy sector.

- Under taken many project in social development
including supply of drinking water to villages
near its mines and to Udaipur through PHED,
GOR.

- The company has also donated around Rs. 6
crores for creation of infrastructure in medical
and health sector.
10
Current Mining Activities at
Jhamarkotra.
- Highly
mechanized
open cast mine
deploying 6
CuM hydraulic
shovels, 85 ton
dumpers, 200-
250 mm
diameter blast
hole drills, 400
HP dozers etc.
11
Current Mining Activities at
Jhamarkotra contd.
- The pit has attained a depth of around 170
meters from the original ground level.
Considered as one of the deepest open cast
mine in the country.

- Mining operations spread over a strike length
of about 10 kms.
12
Achievements :
- Survival of 4.04 Lacs plants with a survival
rate of 60 % (as on 31.12.05). Total area
covered under plantation 218.09 hectares.
Density of plants 1890 plants per hectare.

- A society named Phosphate Vriksha Mitra
Samiti, in which every employee of the SBU
contributes Rs.100/- per year, complements
the plantation of saplings and their
maintenance.

- Company makes equal contribution as a
motivation for encouraging plantation in and
around mine lease areas

- Society has undertaken extensive plantation
work in the residential township, around
Workshops, near Mataji Temple.

19
Achievements : contd.
- Contribution to the Global concern for
promoting Bio-diesel by undertaking a long
term project to plant 1.0 lacs superior quality
Jatropha saplings on barren hillocks in &
around Mine area and setting up of 1.0 TPD
Jatropha oil extraction plant.

- 27,000 Jetropha saplings have already been
planted on waste dump yards. 2 Nos. Motor
vehicles being operated for the last one year
on the fuel obtained by mixing 10% Jatropha
seed oil with diesel oil.

- De-silting of the pond near Jhameshwar
Mahadev temple and beautification by
constructing pucca ghats on its sides.

24
Achievements : contd.
- Treatment plant for re-cycling of
waste water generated during the
beneficiation process.

- Four Check dams with Gabion
structure constructed to prevent
surface run off from waste dump.

- Well equipped environmental lab set
up at mines for internal monitoring of
environmental parameters and to take
quick remedial measures.

25
Achievements : contd.
- Usage of 28
KL water
sprinklers
supported by
automatic
Water
Sprinkler
along the
permanent
haul road.

Achievements : contd.

27
Benefits
- Saving of raw water required for
beneficiation to the tune of 15 lacs Ltrs.
Per day.
- Additional saving of pumping cost from
Jhamri dam.
- Improved health of employees as
confirmed by a medical examination
carried out by National Institute of Miner's
health a professional occupational health
monitoring organization functioning under
the control of Ministry of Mines, GOI.
28
Benefits contd.
- Improved
productivity
and reduced
down time of
heavy earth
moving
equipment
including
achievement of
increased tyre
life.

29
Difficulties faced in Implementation of
condition imposed by MOEF.
- Back filling of the excavated areas
(Condition No.12) is not possible because
the Rock Phosphate deposit is steeply
dipping and occurrence of rock
phosphate deposit has been proved up to
250 MRL with possibility of occurrence
of rock phosphate further below this
level.

- The present lower most working are at
430 MRL. Even at the end of envisaged
project life, mining activities may be
feasible at deeper level in the same pits.
30
Difficulties faced in Implementation of
condition imposed by MOEF.
Back filling is a
practice of land
reclamation restricted
to shallow & flat
deposits like Coal &
Limestone. Our
company is adopting
this practice at Giral
Lignite Project,
Barmer, Sanu
Limestone Project,
Jasalmer, Matasukh
Lignite mine at Nagore
and all Gypsum
mines.
31
Difficulties faced in Implementation of
condition imposed by MOEF.
- Since our company is
implementing the relevant clause
of MOEFs clearence in almost all
the mines it is request that this
condition be withdraw with
respect to Jhamarkotra
Integrated Project because the
implementation of the same is
technically not feasible.
32
Difficulties. : contd.
- Construction of Garland drains to collect the
surface run off from the OB dump is not
feasible due to highly undulating topography
on the footwall side of the deposit. This
aspect has been studied in detail by CMRI-
Dhanbad. They have suggested an
alternative of construction of four number
check dams with Gabion structure. The
recommendations of CMRI has been
implemented and we have constructed four
check dams in place of garland drain to
prevent surface run off.
33
Difficulties. : contd.
- We are facing problem in disposal of
hazardous waste generated from our 3.8 MW
captive power plant, because within the
stipulated storage period of 90 days
accumulation of hazardous waste is not
even a full truck load. There is thus a
reluctance from the parties to lift part loads

- Since we are storing the hazardous waste in
closed barrels in pucca RCC buildings in
order to avoid contact with rain water, we
may be allowed to store this waste for a
period of 180 days.

34
Advice/Suggestion for effective
Implementation of E.C. conditions.
- It would be preferable that for bigger mechanised
mines like ours, Environmental clearance be
given on the basis of total rock handling only
with allowance of 20% variance from the
approved capacity. Reference of mineral
production in the approval is not logical as the
environmental impact is related only to the total
quantum of rock handling.

- Since RSMML is catering to priority sectors like
agriculture, steel, cement & energy, deviation
from the approved annual capacity becomes
inevitable considering the market pressures. The
ministry should consider variance limit of 20% in
the approved plan and no fresh clearance should
be required subject to certain conditions as the
ministry may deem proper for protection of the
environment.
