Importance of Human
Resources
Human resources are an important
part of the value chain
They can be unique, and thus,
a source of core competence
in an organization
If a core competence is related to
HR, the HR can contribute
to competitive advantage

Education is Human Resource Development
(HRD).
Education works as a self-contained system that
strives to provide skills and knowledge to youth,
while HRD is viewed as a corporate function.
However, a strategic blend of HRD and
education would enhance the effectiveness of
both systems and move us toward resolving the
dual problem of reforming our educational
system and restructuring HRD programs.
Employers continually cry for skilled and
knowledgeable workers; however, our
educational system, because of the new
and increasingly complex demands being
placed upon it, is not adequately
preparing young people to enter the
work force.
Training Defined
TRAINING is a learning
process that involves the
acquisition of knowledge,
sharpening of skills, concepts,
rules, or changing of attitudes
and behaviors to enhance the
performance of employees.
Development Defined
DEVELOPMENT, on the other
hand, helps the individual
handle future responsibilities,
with less emphasis on present
job duties.

Importance of HRD

Economic development:

As the human resources of a country develop, the
country progresses and the benefits spread all over
the country. Better skilled and well-trained human
resources attract a larger foreign direct investment
into the country and improve the brand image of the
country internationally.

Increase in Entrepreneurial Activity:
Human resource development may
occur as a result of better education,
training or development of
vocational skills for individuals. This
activity results in an increase in
entrepreneurial activity due to the
creative process that is encouraged
by HRD. Moreover, even in an
economy faced by high levels of
unemployment, vocational training
can generate substantial number of
entrepreneurs who look for self-
employment. Thus, HRD opens more
options and wider avenues of
success for individuals

Increase in Productivity:

HRD leads to better and efficient
utilization of the available resources.
The same numbers of individuals are
able to improve their performance
through training or learning of more
productive skills. This leads to an
increase in productivity in the same
company at the firm-wide level and to
an increase in the overall value of
goods produced at the country-wide
level. An increase in productivity of
employees generates high economic
progress for the country.

HR & Productivity
Outsourcing is
becoming increasing
popular
assists in decreasing
inputs and increase
flexibility
decreases no. of
permanent workers
just contract as
required
HR & Productivity
Can help increase
productivity by ensuring
workers are happy
involves:
finding better/more
efficiency ways to meet
objectives
working on improving
quality of life
retraining and
outplacement

Human Rights:

A better trained and
educated workforce is
well aware of its
rights and is better
able to protect
against human rights
violations. Workplace
environments
improve and workers
rights are
acknowledged with
HRD.

Profitability:
At the firm-wide level,
HRD leads to increased
productivity and better
client service. This leads
to increased revenues at
reduced costs for the
company. Most
companies today are
focused on hiring a well-
trained and competitive
workforce in order to
develop a unique selling
point and enhance their
profitability.
Achievement
Achievement-motivated possess certain
characteristics like the capacity to set high
personal but obtainable goals, the concern
for personal achievement rather than the
rewards of success, and the desire for job-
relevant feedback (How well am I doing?)
rather than for attitudinal feedback (How
well do you like me?)
Entrepreneurship
The entrepreneur is commonly seen as
an innovator a generator of new
ideas and business
processes. Management skill and strong
team building abilities are often
perceived as essential leadership
attributes for successful entrepreneurs.
Political economist Robert Reich
considers leadership, management
ability, and team-building to be essential
qualities of an entrepreneur.
