The solar system consists

of the sun and other astronomical

objects gravitationally bound in orbit around it,
all of which formed from the collapse of a
giant molecular cloud approximately 4.6 billion
years ago.

The solar system consists of the
planets and their satellites, the dwarf
planets, asteroids, Kuiper Belt Objects,
and comets, and interplanetary dust
and gas.

Scientists believe that
the Solar System evolved from a giant
cloud of dust and gas. They believe that
this dust and gas began to collapse under
the weight of its own gravity. At the center
of this spinning dust, a small star began to
form.

This star grew larger and larger as it
collected more and eventually ignited
forming our Sun, while the smaller
clumps became the planets, minor
planets, moons, comets, and asteroids.

Geocentric model also known as
geocentrism, or the Ptolemaic system, is
the superseded theory that the Earth is
the center of the universe, and that all
other objects orbit around it.

A heliocentric model is one in which the
planets revolve around a fixed sun. Thus
Mercury, Venus, Earth, and all other planets
revolve around the sun. The moon is the only
celestial sphere in this system which revolves
around the earth, and, together with it,
around the sun.

P
Planet nearest the sun
Second smallest planet
Covered with craters
Has no moons or rings
About size of Earths moon
Mercury has almost no atmosphere.

Venus is the sixth largest planet.
Sister planet to Earth
Has no moons or rings
Covered with craters,
volcanoes, and mountains
Its about three-fourths the size of
earth.

Third planet from sun
Earth is the fifth largest
planet and the third from the
sun.
Liquid covers 71 percent of
the Earths surface.
The Earth has one moon.
Only planet known to have
life and liquid water

Mars is the fourth planet from
the sun.
Mars has a thin atmosphere
that contains mostly carbon
dioxide.
Mars has two small moons
Phobos and Deimos.

Jupiter is the fifth planet
from the sun
Largest planet in solar
system
Brightest planet in sky
60+ moons, 5 visible from
Earth
Has giant red spot
Rings have 3 parts: Halo
Ring, Main Ring, Gossamer
Ring

Saturn is the second
largest planet
Sixth planet sfrom the
sun.
Beautiful set of rings
Has 31 moons
Largest moon, Titan,
Easily visible in the
night sky
Voyager explored Saturn
and its rings.
7th planet from sun
Has a faint ring system
27 known moons
Covered with clouds
Uranus sits on its side with the
north and south poles sticking
out the sides.

8
th
planet from sun
Discovered through math
7 known moons
Triton largest moon
Great Dark Spot thought to be a
hole, similar to the hole in the
ozone layer on Earth

9
th
planet from sun (usually)
Orbits very slowly
Moon, Charon, is very close
to Pluto and about the same
size
Pluto is the only planet that has
not been visited by a spacecraft

The sun is the biggest,
brightest, and hottest
object in the solar
system.
The sun is an ordinary
star.
The sun is made of
about 70% hydrogen
and 28% helium.

Small icy body in space
that sheds gas and
dust.
Icy comets are ancient
objects left over from
the formation of the
solar system

Small rocky or metallic body that
orbits the Sun.
Asteroids range in size from a
few meters to over 500 km (300
mi) wide.
They are generally irregular in
shape and often have surfaces
covered with craters.

A meteor, or shooting star, streaks
across the night sky.
Meteors begin as chunks of rock or
metal drifting through space.
As they fall through Earths atmosphere,
they heat
up until they glow
bright enough to be
seen from the ground.
