R.A.R.S,ANAKAPALLI
export oriented agriculture

principle investigator:
S.Eswara Reddy, Ph.D
Sr.Scientist(Hort)
Trials conducted during
2005-2006
 Evaluation of vanilla at different
spacings under polyhouse conditions
for export

 Vanilla cuttings were planted at a

spacing of 1x1m,1.5x1.5m,2x2m,and
2.5x2.5 m.
Data on Vegetative growth parameters

a) Number of leaves /vine

spacing (mts)

1x1 m : 19.61
1.5x1.5m : 21.07
2.0x2.0m : 22.51
2.5x2.5m : 19.88

b) Vine length (cm)

1x1m : 81.53 cm
1.5x1.5m : 103.46 cm
2.0x2.0 m : 98.12 cm
2.5x2.5 : 112.14 cm
Present recommendations, knowledge and justification :
In recent years vanilla prices have sky rocketed in the
International Market. Now the present situation in the World market with
regard to vanilla essence has tremendously increased, Hence there will be
good demand for the natural vanilla There fore to evaluate vanilla
it different spacing the investigation is designed.

Techniques to be adopted :
a) Design : RBD
b) Treatments : Four
Spacing at 1 x 1 mt, 1.5 x 1.5mt, 2 x 2 mt, 2.5 x 2.5 mt
c) Replications : Four
d) Plot size : Five vines / treatment will be
used to collect data.
Data on Vegetative growth parameters

a) Number of leaves :
1x1 m : 19.61
1.5x1.5m : 21.07
2.0x2.0m : 22.51
2.5x2.5m : 19.88

1.5x1.5m : 103.46 cm
2.0x2.0 m : 98.12 cm
2.5x2.5 : 112.14 cm

Expected benefit to farmers on adoption :

Optimum number of vines can be grown in unit area

and the income of farmers can be increased by judicious
utilization of space in the polyhouse
justification
Vanilla is being grown in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram
districts of north coastal zone, due to the encouragement given by
Department of Horticulture. However, there is no scientific knowledge
generated and technology available on vanilla and inter crops in it with
ANGRAU. The information generated through this experiment will fill
the gap
progress
 A polyhouse was constructed at a cost of
2.5 lakhs
 A shade net was established at a cost of
20,000 rupees to multiply vanilla cuttings

 Foggers were fitted in the polyhouse to

regulate temperature
 Drip irrigation was installed in the
polyhouse to irrigate vanilla plants.
DEVELOPING AGRO TECHNIQUES FOR
GUAR
 Guar, or cluster bean, (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.))
is a drought-tolerant annual legume crop. India
accounts for 80% of the total guar produced in the
world and 70% is cultivated in Rajasthan. Apart from
Rajasthan, it is being grown mainly in Gujarat,
Haryana and Punjab. It is also grown in some parts of
Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
PROGRAM FOR 2006-07
Work done during
2005-2006
 Performance of 20 guar varieties was
evaluated for their suitability to north
coastal zone.
 The varieties are RGM-111,
RGC-936,HGS-884,GG-1,G-36, GAUG-
004,GAUG-9005,GAUG-9003,HG-563,RGC-
1002,G-986,RGM-112,G-16,
G-42,RGC-1025,G-39,G-28,G-3,G-4,G-5
 RGM-111 performed well over other 19 varieties
under evaluation.
 Yield and yield characters of RGM-111
 Seed yield (kg/ha) : 639.75
 Days to flowering : 28. 7
 Maturity (days) : 75.1
 Plant height (cm) : 63.52
 No.of branches/plant : 6.26
 No of pods/plant : 46.89
 No of seeds/pod : 7.34
Budget during 2004-2005
 Green house : Rs.2,50,000/-
 Drip : Rs.30,000/-
 Shadenet : Rs.20,000/-
 Nonrecurring items : Rs.1,00,000/-
