The Lathe Machine
A machine tool
which rotates
the work piece
on its axis to
perform
various
operations

The Lathe Machine
A Lathe Machine is used for :

History of the Lathe
History of the Lathe
Ancient Times: Egypt
Earliest depiction of
the device is from a
wall relief in an
ancient Egyptian
tomb dated around
1300 BC.
Two people were
meant to operate the
ancient Egyptian
lathe, with one
person turning the
wood piece with a
rope while the other
person shaped it with
a sharp tool.

History of the Lathe
Ancient Times: Rome
The ancient Romans
improved on the
Egyptian design by
adding a turning
bow.
They used the lathe
to make wood
containers and
furniture parts.

History of the Lathe
Middle Ages
By the 15
th
Century
places in Europe,
like Germany,
England, and France
were already using
the Lathe
It had evolved from
hand-operated
turning into the
"spring pole" lathe

History of the Lathe
Industrial Revolution
Widely used in all
industries
By 18
th
Century water
powered lathes
became available
By 19
th
Century
mechanical lathes
with variable work
speeds became
available

History of the Lathe
Present
Automated Lathes
became avaible with
the advancement of
electronics
Since 1950 computer
systems were used for
better precision

Mounting a Lathe
Mounting a Lathe
Step 1 : The work center line must be accurately centered along the axis of
the lathe spindle
Step 2 : The work must be held rigidly while being turned.
Step 3 : The work must not be sprung out of shape by the holding
device.
Step 4 : The work must be adequately supported against any sagging
caused by its own weight and against springing caused by the action
of the cutting tool.
Dismounting a Lathe
Mounting a Lathe
Dismount the
Work Piece
Dismount the Tool
bit and Tool bit
holder
Dismount he drill
bit and the drill
chuck/ball-
bearing live center
Dismounting the work piece
Step 1 : Use the key to loosen the workpiece that is held by the
chuck or the spindle
Step 2 : Rotate the key counter-clockwise by putting force
on it to loosen.
Step 3 : Remove the key from the chuck/spindle to prevent
injuries.
**Do not leave the key connected when not in use
Dismounting the tool bit and holder
Step 1 : Using the allen driver to loosen the grip of the
tool bit holder to the toll bit itself
Step 2 : Rotate the allen driver counter-clockwise by
putting force on it to loosen
Step 3 : Remove the tool bit holder buy using a
wrench to unscrew the bolts, making it loose enough
for the holder to be removed
Dismounting the live center
Step 1 : Use the key to loosen the drill bit that is
connected to the drill chuck to prevent it from breaking
into pieces
Step 2 : Rotate the key counter-clockwise by putting
force on it to loosen
Step 3 : Remove the drill chuck by unwinding the
hand wheel counter-clockwise to its end and pull out
the drill chuck or the ball-bearing live center.
Safety with the Lathe
Safety Tips
Correct dress is important, remove rings and watches, roll sleeves above elbows.
Wear safety shoes and pants.
Dont wear loose clothes.
Always stop the lathe before making adjustments.
Do not change spindle speeds until the lathe comes to a complete stop.
Handle sharp cutters, centers, and drills with care.
Remove chuck keys and wrenches before operating
Always wear goggles or protective eye protection.
Handle heavy chucks with care and protect the lathe ways with a block of wood
when installing a chuck.

Safety Tips
Know where the emergency stop is before operating the lathe.
Use pliers or a brush to remove chips and swarf, never your hands for it may cut
you due to their sharpness.
Never lean on the lathe.
Never lay tools directly on the lathe ways. If a separate table is not available, use
a wide board.
Keep tools overhang as short as possible.
Never attempt to measure work while it is turning.
Be sure the work area is clear of obstructions that you might fall or trip over.
Always use assistance when handling large work pieces or large objects.
When using the Lathe Machine, use lubricant to spray the work piece during the
process to let it cool.

Types of Tool bits
Tool bits
Used to turn an object to a semi
square shoulder
Used for roughing

A standard turning tool with an
angle
Can also be used to accomplish a
semi square shoulder

Toolbits
Used for fine finishes
Can also be used to form corner radius
Used for light finishing cuts

Toolbits
Can be used to reproduce a shape into
an object
Used for facing

Toolbits
Used for grooving Used to cut off stock to a certain
length

Toolbits
Used for threading Used to cut off stock to a certain length

Threading
Threading
Threading is the
process of cutting a
long, spiraling
groove into a work
piece with a single-
point tool.
Threading Set-Up
