The document discusses the nature of logic. It defines logic as both an art and a science of correct, valid, and true reasoning. As an art, logic involves developing reasoning into a habit or skill through systematization and organization. As a science, logic is a systematized body of knowledge that organizes reasoning. The document also discusses formal logic, which studies the form of arguments to test validity, and material logic, which determines the truth or falsity of arguments. It outlines divisions of logic and operations of the mind involved in logic, including simple apprehension, judgment, and reasoning.

WHAT IS LOGIC? Is it something important to me? Is it applicable to my daily life? So, what is the business of logic? WHAT IS LOGIC? LOGIC is an art and a science of correct and valid and true reasoning. LOGIC AS AN ART Why logic is an art? What is art, anyway?
LOGIC AS AN ART Art is a skill. When a skill is developed, it becomes a habit. Habit manages things, thus, it facilitates.
LOGIC AS AN ART
facilitates reasoning.
LOGIC AS A SCIENCE Why logic is a science? What is science? LOGIC AS A SCIENCE Science is a body of knowledge. But what kind of body of knowledge? LOGIC AS A SCIENCE Science is a systematized body of knowledge.
LOGIC AS A SCIENCE When something is systematized, it must be organized. LOGIC AS A SCIENCE ...organizes reasoning. CORRECT AND VALID REASONING Logic as a study of correct and valid reasoning, we are talking about the form of arguments. Using the form, we test the validity of arguments. This is what we study in formal logic. TRUE REASONING Logic as a study of true reasoning, we are talking about the content of arguments. Here, we determine the truth and falsity of an argument. This is the concern of material logic, a discipline related to epistemology and critereology.
DIVISIONS OF LOGIC
1. Formal and Material 2. Deductive and Inductive 3. Traditional and Modern OPERATIONS OF THE MIND Simple Apprehension (SA) Judgment (J) Reasoning (R) SIMPLE APPREHENSION Basic operation of the mind where it grasps the identity of a thing/being. There is no affirmation or denial. SIMPLE APPREHENSION Dematerialization: - removing of material elements - abstraction SIMPLE APPREHENSION Degrees of Abstraction: 1. Sciences 2. Mathematics 3. Metaphysics SIMPLE APPREHENSION Internal Sign of SA idea/concept (abstract) External Sign of SA term (can be a cypher or a code, symbol or written. SIMPLE APPREHENSION Predicability: capacity of terms/concepts to be compared or associated with an another term/concept. JUDGMENT Mind affirms/denies the unity/connection of two or more ideas/concepts/terms. It is affirmative, if mind joins two or more ideas. It is negative, if mind separates two or more ideas. REASONING It is when mind passes from one judgment (premise1) to another judgment (premise2), and arrives with a new judgment (conclusion). Simply put, it is a comparison between judgments.
