Problem Statement
With many regions getting flooded and with
no proper monitoring and control of the flood
waters, heavy loss of property and life are
recorded each year.
There is an increasing need of monitoring
and control of the flood waters in flood prone
areas to minimize loss of property and life.
Definition of Project
This project describes the application of
remotely sensed precipitation to the
monitoring of floods in a region.
It describes the design of an intelligent
embedded GSM auto-SMS system and its
integration to automatic flood system to
provide fast and reliable communication.
Objectives
To provide quick and effective flood event
response
To control the flood water level
To issue warnings about the flooded regions
To minimize loss of property
Scope
To provide automatic sensing and control of
water level in flood prone areas.
To provide quick, and effective response.
Limitations
If your GSM network fails, the entire system
crumbles.
If the pump fails, the water level cannot be
controlled. Thus the whole region gets
flooded.
If the HMI fails to update/recognize an event
on time, then proper control cannot be
coordinated.
How It Works?
How It Works? (Continued)
The water level sensor will constantly monitor the
water level.
The microcontroller will determine whether the water
level is above or below the threshold provided to it.
If the water level is considered high by the
microcontroller, then it will activate the GSM module.
The GSM module will send SMSs to the controlling
authorities.
Simultaneously, the relay driver activates the water
pump.
The pump will begin to soak the water out of the
flooded region.
The traffic module will be activated and will direct the
traffic accordingly.
Features
Automatic control of water pumping system
It is a cost effective manner to broadcast
flood warnings to the civilians
Provides advanced warnings about water
logged areas in a quick and effective manner
Allows emergency teams to plan and execute
rescues in an effective manner
Provides efficient traffic control to minimize
loss of life and property
Software
Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0
Windows XP Service Pack - 2
Pinnacle for micro controller programming
Hardware
PC with minimum 256 MB RAM, Pentium 4
processor, 20 MB disk space.
Water level sensors by electrodes
Micro controller 89c51
Submergible water pump
GSM module and a rs232 cable
Application
Monitoring and Controlling of Flood
Managing traffic
Irrigation
Monitoring of water level in rivers

Cost (Rs.)
GSM Module: 7000
Water pump: 500
Circuit (including microcontroller): 4000
Conclusion
With the current system getting outdated and
proving to be dangerously slow in response,
the need to change to a more quick and
effective system is dire.
With our new system providing a cost
effective, lightning quick response, time
saving information, and life saving capability,
it is the perfect technology to take over from
the existing system.
