JIT

JUST IN TIME
Just in time is an approach of
continuous and forced problem
solving via a focus on throughput and
reduced inventory.
With JIT,materials arrive where they
are needed only when they are
needed.

JIT
Eliminate Waste
Remove Variability
Improves Throughput

Eliminate Waste
Types of waste
Overproduction
Waiting
Transportation
Inefficient processing
Inventory
Unnecessary motion
Product defects

5S ...?
Safety: Build good safety practices
into five activities.
Support/maintenance : Reduce
variabiity,unplanned downtime, and
costs. Integrate daily shine tasks
with preventive maintenance.
5S provide a vehicle for continuous
improvement.

Remove Variability
Any deviation from the optimum
process that delivers perfect
product on time, every time.
Variability is a polite word for
problems.
Both JIT and Inventory reduction
are effective tools for identifying
causes of variability.

Improve throughput
Throughput is the time required to
move orders through the production
process, from receipt to delivery.
Manufacturing cycle time is the time
between the arrival of raw materials
and the shipping of finished goods.
Pull systems: Uses signals to request
production and delivery from supplying
stations to stations that have
production capacity available.

JIT Partnerships
Partnerships of suppliers and
purchases that remove waste and
drive down costs for mutual benefits.
Characteristics of JIT partnerships.
Removal of unnecessary activities
Removal of in-plant inventory
Removal of in-transit inventory
Obtain improved quality and reliability
through long term commitment

Concern of suppliers
Diversification
Poor customer scheduling
Frequent engineering changes
Quality assurance
Small lot sizes
Physical proximity

JIT Layout
JIT Layout reduce another kind of
waste-movement. JIT layout place
materials directly in the location
where needed.
Distance reduction
Increased Flexibility
Impact on employees
Reduced space and Inventory

JIT Inventory
The minimum inventory necessary
to keep a perfect system running.
Reduce variability
Reduces Inventory
Reduces Lot Sizes
Reduce Setup Costs

Kanban
Japanese word for card
Pronounced kahn-bahn (not can-ban)
Authorizes production from
downstream operations
Pulls material through plant
May be a card, flag, verbal signal
etc.
Used often with fixed-size containers
Add or remove containers to change
production rate
