Hello kids! This is asthma wizard! He is an expert about
asthma, and he's here to teach kids like you everything he
knows, so let's get started.

Do you know how many kids have asthma?

Asthma is one of the most common chronic illnesses affecting children in this
country. As many as 5% of children less than 15 years old, or almost 5 million
children, have asthma. Asthma is the most common pediatric chronic lung
disorder.
See, This is Ravi. Ravi has asthma. Lots of kids have asthma. Asthma can make it

to breathe with asthma.
Asthma Attack & its Symptoms

An attack of asthma can come on quickly. It can happen at any time or place.
Tina has Asthma. She wants to know the early signs of Asthma.
Following are the signs -

She used a checklist to learn her early warning signs. The

wizard helped her remember her early warning signs.
So, Asthma symptoms are things you feel when you are
already having trouble breathing. Heena's asthma symptoms
are:

 coughing

 wheezing

 shortness of breath

 tightness in the chest

What Is a Peak Flow Meter?

A peak flow meter is a device which helps asthmatic patients take care of their
asthma.

Asthmatic patient like Heena blows into the peak flow meter to see how well
she is breathing. When Heena is breathing well, she blows out fast. The peak
flow number is high.
When Heena is having trouble breathing, she blows out slow. The
peak flow number is low.

Heena uses her peak flow meter every morning and evening. This
helps her see how well she is breathing.
What Are Peak Flow Zones?

Peak flow zones are like traffic lights, green, yellow and red.

When your number is in the green zone, it means go - you are breathing fine.
When your number is in the yellow zone, it means slow down, you may need
to take medicine.

When your number is in the red zone, it means get help now , you need
medicine to help your breathing. You may need to see the doctor.
What makes Asthma worse?

Lets talk about things that make asthma worse. When you are around these
things, you may have trouble breathing right away or after awhile. This is why
its important to be a "detective" and know the things that make you have
trouble breathing.
Become a detective. These things can make you have trouble breathing:

Detective irritants Cold Exercise Emotions

Allergens
Irritants
Irritants are things that bother the airways in the lungs. Cigarette smoke,
smoke from fireplaces, air pollution and strong smells are irritants.
Everyone with asthma should stay away from irritants.

Detective irritants Cold Exercise Emotions

Allergens
COLD

Everybody with asthma gets sick, especially in the winter time. When people
with asthma get sick, they might have more trouble with asthma. Main things
to help you stay healthy, wash your hands! i.e. clean yourself.

Detective
irritants Cold Exercise Emotions

Allergens
Exercise can make asthma worse. Like Ravi used to have trouble breathing
when he played football. Ravi's doctor said he should use his inhaled medicine
before exercise so he wouldn't have trouble breathing. Ravi's doctor called this
a pre-treatment. Ravi is happy now because he can keep up with his friends.

Detective irritants Cold Exercise Emotions

Allergens
Sometimes laughing or crying really hard can make you have trouble breathing.
Like when the Wizard does silly magic tricks, Ravi laughs really hard and has
trouble breathing. Then the doctor told Ravi he should use a pre-treatment
before he watches the Wizard do magic.

Detective irritants Cold Exercise Emotions

Allergens
Allergens are things that bother airways in the lungs. Sometimes allergens can
make noses runny and eyes itchy. Not all children with asthma have allergies.
Children can also have different allergies. Furry animals, pollens from trees,
grasses and molds, dust mites, cockroaches and foods are allergens. You
should stay away from things you are allergic to.

But Asthma

One time at school a friend asked Ravi if he could catch Ravi's asthma.

Ravi likes to play with his friends. Today they are all going swimming.
What Can Kids with Asthma Do?
Asthmatic Kids should know the following Points-

• Peak flow numbers and zones

• Early warning signs and asthma symptoms

• Things that make their asthma worse

• Asthma medicines
MEDICINES FOR ASTHMA

Look through the wizard's magnifying glass. You will see two names. These
are names of two types of asthma medicines you will learn about.

Long term control medicines are medicines you take every day so you
don't have trouble breathing.

Quick relief medicines are medicines you take when you have trouble
breathing.
Student's CONTIRIBUTION
• Team- Students are divided into 5 groups, having 5
students in each group.
• Job- They have to go to the Asthmatic students or
teachers or without Asthma and noted
down the symptoms, causes or precautions
taken by the Asthmatic Patients. And
difference between the activities done by
Asthmatic and non- asthmatic patients.
ACITIVITY

• Here is a fun and hands on activity that is done by the

students which will make them understand about asthma
better.
Teacher- You will need two pieces of paper for this activity.
Roll up a piece of paper like a tube. Pretend this is an airway in your lungs.
Put your hand at one end of the tube.
Blow through the other end of the tube.
Feel the air that goes through the tube.

When the airways are open, air can get in and out easily.
What happens to the air you breath in and out when asthma gets worse?
 Roll up another piece of paper like a tube.
 Crumple the piece of paper make it really tight. Pretend this is an airway
when your asthma gets worse.
 Put your hand at one end of the tube.
 Blow through the tube again.
 Can you feel the air go through the tube now?

See how hard it is for air to get through the tube. This is what it's like in the airways
when asthma gets worse. It gets hard to breathe.

Patients did not get even beds in Hospitals.
And everyday the statistics get increases. And people have
to go to heaven just because of their ignorance towards
Dengue. As Dengue needs Prevention than Cure.

What is dengue fever?

Dengue Fever is an illness caused by

infection with a virus transmitted by the
Aedes mosquito.
Symptoms of Dengue Fever

Example of a skin rash due

to dengue fever
Characteristics of the
Aedes Mosquito
One distinct physical
feature – black and
white stripes on its
body and legs.

Bites during the day.

Lays its eggs in clean,

stagnant water.
Do you know…
Only the female Aedes mosquito
feeds on blood. This is because
they need the protein found in
blood to produce eggs. Male
mosquitoes feed only on plant
nectar.

On average, a female Aedes

mosquito can lay about 300 eggs
during her life span of 14 to 21
days.
Life cycle of the Aedes Mosquito

How Do Aedes Mosquitoes Transmit
Diseases...
Mosquito bites and sucks And passes the virus
blood containing the virus to healthy people
from an infected person. when it bites them.

Virus is carried in its

body.
This is what you
can do to help…
Prevent Aedes from Breeding!

Remove ALL sources of

stagnant water.

Deny the Aedes mosquito of any

chance to breed.
10-Minute
Wipe-Out Exercise
Change water in vases on alternate days.
Remove water from flower-pot plates on
alternate day.
Turn over all pails and water
storage containers.
And tell your parents or any adults in your
house to clear blockages.
Unwanted items

Do not litter. Rubbish such as cups and

bottles can collect rain water and breed
mosquitoes.
Before you leave for holidays…
Before you leave for holidays…

• Cover all toilet bowls in your home.

• Seal off the overflow pipe of the flushing cistern.

• Cover all gully/floor traps.

• Add insecticide to places that mosquitoes could

potentially breed, such as flower vases and places
where stagnant water could not be removed.
Before you leave for holidays…(Cont’d)

• Clear blockages and add Bti insecticide in roof

gutters.

• Turn over all water storage containers.

•Ask a relative or close friend to check your home

regularly for stagnant water if you are going away
for a long period of time.

• Leave your contact with your neighbours or the

neighbourhood police post/ centre so that you can
be reached easily.
