INTRODUCTION 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 2 WHAT IS LI-FI?? LI-FI is transmission of data through illumination, sending data through a LED light bulb that varies in intensity faster than human eye can follow LI-FI comes under VLC(VISIBLE LIGHT COMMUNICATION)
HISTORY 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 3 The technology truly began during the 1990's in countries like Germany, Korea, and Japan where they discovered LED's could be retrofitted to send information. Harald Haas continues to wow the world with the potential to use light for communication.
WORKING 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 4 How LI-FI works? operational procedure is very simple, if the led is on, you transmit a digital 1, if its off you transmit a 0. The LEDs can be switched on and off very quickly, which gives nice opportunities for transmitting data. Hence all that us required is some LEDS and a controller that code data into those LEDs.
Working principle
9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 5 PRESENT SCENARIO 1.4 Million 5 Billion 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 6 PRESENT SCENARIO Radio Spectrum is congested but the demand for wireless data double each year. Every thing, it seems want to use wireless data but the capacity is drying up. 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 7 Radio Waves Infrared Rays Visible Rays Ultraviolet Rays X- Rays Gama Rays
Gama rays cant be used as they could be dangerous. X-rays have similar health issues. Ultraviolet light is good for place without people, but other wise dangerous for the human body. Infrared, due to eye safety regulation, can only be used with low power.
HENCE WE LEFT WITH THE ONLY THE VISIBLE - LIGHT SPECTRUM. 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 8 Transmission element Signals from the data input is modulated to intensity of light. Transmission side simply contains an led lamp which transmits the modulated light signals. This led lamp contains a series of LEDs which proto fits according to the input given . 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 9 Receiving element Receiving elements are AVALANCHE PHOTO DIODE and image sensor. Avalanche photo diode is responsible for converting the light signal into electrical signal and further the procedure is carried out by image sensor. 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 10 Illustration 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 11 DIFFERENCE B/W TECHNOLOGIES TECHNOLOGY SPEED Fire wire 800 Mbps USB 3.0 5 Gbps Thunder bolt 20 Gbps Wi-Fi 150 Mbps Bluetooth 3 Mbps IrDA 4 Mbps Wi-Gig 2 Gbps Giga-IR 1Gbps Li-Fi >10 Gbps 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 12 POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF LI- FI Li Fi technology is still in its infancy .However some areas where it seems perfectly applicable are:-
TRAFFIC LIGHTS Traffic lights can communicate to the car and with each other.
Cars have LED-based headlights, LED-based cack lights, and cars can communicate with each other and prevent accidents in by exchanging information. 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 13 INTRINSICALLY SAFE ENCIRONMENTS Visible Light is more safe than RF, hence it can be used in places where RF can't be used such as petrochemical plants, airplanes etc. PUBLIC INTERNET HOTSPOTS There are millions of street lamps deployed around the world.
Each of these street lamps could be a free access point. POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF LI- FI 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 14 ON OCEAN BEDS Li-Fi can even work underwater were Wi-Fi fails completely, thereby throwing open endless opportunities for military/navigation operations. POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF LI- FI 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 15 ADVANTAGES Availability Efficiency Easy to use Fast data transfer Harmless Low-cost
9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 16 DISADVANTAGE The major disadvantage here is the fact that these signals cannot penetrate walls. So if you want to move from one room to another, you will need to have a wired bulb present in that room as well! A major challenge facing Li-Fi is how the receiving device will transmit back to transmitter. 9/6/2014 UIET, PANJAB UNIVERSITY 17 CONCLUSION The possibilities are numerous and can be explored further. If this technology can be put into practical use , every bulb can be used something like a Wi-Fi hotspots to transmit wireless data.
