SAP NetWeaver: The Foundation for SAP 11 September 2014 Sams Teach Yourself SAP in 24 hours- hour 5 & 6 13 A Brief History of SAP NetWeaver Prior to the introduction of SAP NetWeaver in 2004, a large part of the SAP technology stack was synonymous with the SAP computing platform.
We often referred to this stack simply as the SAP Basis layer.
SAP supported a handful of operating systems and databases, all systems were built on Advanced Business Application Programming(ABAP), and the systems could be extended a bit but were generally part of a somewhat isolated SAP-only landscape.
However, the relative simplicity of the client/server era that gave birth to SAP R/3 is long gone, and the complexities of the post- client/server era are all around us. 11 September 2014 Sams Teach Yourself SAP in 24 hours- hour 5 & 6 14 Introducing NetWeaver In 2004, SAP introduced SAP NetWeaver and broadened the technology stack concept into a complete integration platform. The earliest NetWeaver foundation included WebAS ABAP and Java components. Infrastructure (the precursor to todays SAP NetWeaver Process Integration) allowed SAP and non-SAP systems to connect more easily. As each Business Suite component was updated, SAP took the opportunity to NetWeaver-enable them, In this way, SAP R/3 Enterprise eventually morphed into SAP ERP Central Component (ECC). Applications like SAP SRM soon followed, while brand new components like SAP Product Lifestyle Management (PLM) benefited developmentally from a clean slate. 11 September 2014 Sams Teach Yourself SAP in 24 hours- hour 5 & 6 15 The SAP NetWeaver Umbrella: Six Areas

11 September 2014 Sams Teach Yourself SAP in 24 hours- hour 5 & 6 18 Strategic Benefits of NetWeaver More rapidly deployed business solutions. Decreased development and testing costs. Easily enabled integration, speeding up the time necessary to deploy SAP and shrinking the time necessary to perform system upgrades and so on. Reduced system lifecycle total cost of ownership (TCO), primarily because maintenance and support costs are dramatically reduced in the wake of platform standardization. (Before NetWeaver, each SAP product was installed a little bit differently than its counterparts.) Through SAP NetWeaver, a companys IT organization needs to spend less time performing low-value maintenance task. Greater potential for innovation; IT organizations can spend more time figuring out how to meet the changing needs of the business. 11 September 2014 Sams Teach Yourself SAP in 24 hours- hour 5 & 6 19 Bringing It All Together As companies seek to address new business challenges through SAP NetWeaver technologies, they must gather requirements to determine the type of solution needed.
