Stress management

By Nitin Oke
For SAFE HANDS
Stress
Stress plays an important role in life. It warns
you about potentially dangerous or harmful
situations,
motivates you to perform to the limits of your
ability, and adds excitement and challenge.
However, when you experience too much
stress or lack good skills to cope with stress,
it takes its charge both physically and
emotionally. Since it is not possible to get rid
of stress completely, it is important to learn to
manage it, before it manages you.
Relation between stress and
performance
Slow Down
Our society emphasis the notion that
we must see more,
do more,
and be more.
Set aside some time each day for peace
and serenity to reconnect with yourself
and your own inner wisdom.
Be Aware
When you are going in several different
directions at once, you become less
efficient, less effective, and more stressed.
Do one task at a time. You will not only get
more from each moment but by selecting
something to be aware of, you are also not
focusing on something else.
Manage Your Time Wisely
Regularly write down a list of things to do; by
writing it down, you dont have to keep thinking
about it so you wont forget it.
But more importantly, put them in sequence as
there is always more to do than time to do it, so
rather than getting stressed out over what is left,
make sure you complete the most important tasks
first. Dont waste time on fake relaxation like
watching TV; instead use that time for physical
activity relaxation techniques, or connecting with
loved ones. You will feel better and less stressed
out!
Know Your Limits
Sometimes reducing stress means
learning to say no, reducing your
responsibilities, and doing less. As is said,
you are a human being, not a human
doing!
Search for buddy
Let there be some one with whom you will
share communicate promise the goals
you have in your mind.
This buddy will not be your friend as he /
she will stake you up for success.

Express Your Feelings
Keeping things bottled up inside is a major
source of stress for many people. Say whats on
your mind in a direct, non-threatening way. Use I
statements like I feel angry when, and I am
upset that. Communicate your desire for
change in specific, positive terms.
If you have trouble with this, try writing it down
in a journal or letter, talking to a trusted friend, or
talking to a counselor or psychologist to help you
develop these important skills.
Take Care of Yourself
Stress alone can not make us ill
, but we are less able to handle stress
when we are not healthy.
eat healthfully,
exercise regularly,
get enough sleep.
Relaxation Techniques
Removal of stress is impossible: Since
stress is a natural part of your existence,
learning specific techniques to help you relax
will help prevent its potentially harmful
effects. Like any important skill, relaxation
techniques take practice.
Set aside some time each day, perhaps
before you go to sleep at night or during a
break at work, to develop this skill. You can
use it often to help you de-stress, anytime,
anyplace.
Even now problem is problem
All these things we do. We try our level
best but we can not solve the problems of
physics.
The general reasons are
Dont pose extra conditions which are not
stated by problem
Pill off unwanted information
Reform the problem ( the dog is lion when is
in familiar conditions)
Relaxation Techniques
Simple Stillness : Try the simple act of
being still and quiet. Allowing yourself to
turn inward and listening to your own
thoughts can sometimes bring about the
most relaxed state of all!
Giving yourself a small block of time each
day for relaxation will have long-lasting
benefits.
Relaxation Techniques
Deep Breathing
Lie down or sit in a comfortable chair, preferably in a quiet place, free from
distractions. Close your eyes and notice your breath. Is it shallow and just at
the top of your lungs?
Now, slowly take a deep breath, following the air with your attention as it
goes in.
Exhale slowly, taking twice as long to exhale as it took to inhale.
Every time you exhale, pause for a second to stay conscious of your
breathing. Let your shoulders droop and feel yourself relax more with each
breath.
Repeat this several times. Count slowly to 5 as you inhale, 10 as you
exhale. Now notice whether your abdomen is expanding with each breath.
Practice deep abdominal breathing to help you relax further After 5 to 10
minutes, take a deep breath and hold it. Slowly open your eyes and slowly
exhale. You should feel more relaxed and comfortable.
With practice, even a few of these deep-breathing exercises will allow you
to quickly enter a state of relaxation.
Dont impose extra conditions

1? There was a blind beggar who had a
brother, but this brother had no brothers.
What was the relationship between the
two?
If you have any trouble in answering this
question, it is because you are imposing a
condition that isnt there. Try again.

2? Without taking your pencil off
the paper, draw four straight-
line segments that will pass
through the nine dots.
Again if you are in trouble,
because you are
unconsciously assuming
something not stated in the
problem.

Dont impose extra conditions

3? Three points can be arranged
so that the three distances they
determine are equal. Arrange four
points so that the six distances
they determine is equal.
Again if you are in trouble, once
again you have imposed an
unstated assumption. And rethink
is your solution is solution

Dont impose extra conditions

Problem is not difficult we make it
so
It is quite common for us to make unstated
assumptions, which then lead us to work
on the problem quite different than the
problem given to us.
In problems given above, we assume
that, all blind beggars are male,
that segment can not be extended beyond
the given square region
that all the four points must be on a plane

Remove all irrelevant details

From given problem after
reading it properly take out the
important part from the
problem, which is relevant with
the question. For example if
problem is as
Remove all irrelevant details

4?A fast moving train with 12 bogies left
sunny Mumbai at 12:01PM on Monday,
January 12, traveling at 100km/hr and
heading for Nagpur. One hour latter in
perfect weather a slow moving freight train
loaded with coal left Nagpur for Mumbai, at
40km/hr. At 5:19PM.When the trains were
passing through a tunnel near Kasara they
crashed head on and both engine drivers
were killed. Which of the trains will be
farther from Mumbai?
Remove all irrelevant details
In above paragraph there is hardly a piece
of information, which is related to the
problem. When you peel off the irrelevant
information the problem reduces to If two
objects (trains) are at same point, which of
them is farther from another point
(Mumbai). now the answer is most trivial.

Try few more
5?If there are twelve 2Rs stamps in
a dozen, How many 4Rs stamps
are there in a dozen?
6? Rakesh had seven apples he
ate all but three. How many were
left?

7?A man walks 7 km south, 7 km
west and 7 km north, ending where
he began. Where did he start his
journey? Is there more than one
answer?

Try these also
9?Three coins can all be
placed in contact as indicated
in diagram. Four coins can
be placed so that each
touches all the others by
laying the forth on the top of
the other three. How can you
place five coins so that each
coin touches the other four?

Let this be last one
10?Hariharan had five pieces of
chains as shown in figure. To
make a long chain out of it
Hariharan will need to open ring
3 (step one) and link it to 4 (step
two) then he need to open ring 6
(step three) and link it to 7 (step
four) in this way he can make the
chain in eight operations. How
can you help him to make in six?

Hints to selected questions:
5 > six ? Oh God!
6 > four is wrong read the question again.
7 > can a table be in touch with two walls?
8 > If your answer is North Pole then fine,
but think of many more.
9 > When are you going to leave the habit
of using the previous answer.
10> Its easy as 1, 2, and 3. Is it over?

Organize the given information

11?A lone swan was flying in opposite direction
from a flock (group) of swans. He shouted
Hello, 100 swans The leader of the flock
answered We are not 100! If you take twice
our number and add half our number, and
add a quarter of our number, and finally add
you, the result is 100. The flock went away
leaving the lone one puzzled. The lone swan
landed near a pound. A crow was seating
there, saw the swan puzzled.

Organize the given information

After knowing the problem he asked him to
organize the information properly, when crow
realized that swan could not do the same he drew a
line representing the flock. Then he drew second
line of same length, a third line of half the length
another line of a fourth as long and a dot indicating
the swan. He then said this is 100, and then rubbed
the dot, immediately swan said, now it is 99.
Crow added now you can see one is four quarter
hence there are in all 11 quarters which make 99
hence one quarter is 9 thus the flock will contain
9X4 = 36 swans. (You may do it by considering x
and then 2x + x/2 + x/4 = 99).
