A disproportionate number of African Caribbean men
are diagnosed with schizophrenia, leading some
people to believe that the entire theory of schizophrenia
is based on racist ideas.
African Caribbean men are also more likely than their
white counterparts to be inpatients on mental health
wards, to receive invasive medical treatments (e.g.
electroconvulsive therapy) rather than talking
treatments (e.g. psychotherapy or counselling), and to
be re-admitted to hospital after discharge into the
community.
