The Holy Spirit

Part 1
The Person of The Holy Spirit
Who / what is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the Third person in the Trinity ( same as the Father and the Son)
He is the Spirit of God
He has a will ;
He can speak
He is a gentleman

Omnipotent All powerful. Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy
Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you: therefore
also that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God.
Omnipresent At all places at once. Psalms 139:7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? or where
shall I flee from your presence?
Omniscient All knowing. 1 Corinthians 2:10 But God has revealed them unto us by his Spirit:
for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God.
Eternal - Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal
Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve
the living God?
The Holy Spirit was part of all things, from the very beginning of scripture to the very
end of scripture . Genesis 1.1 -2.and the Spirit of God hovered over the face of the
waters

The Holy Spirit
Four important principles to remember
The Holy Spirit is God, but He is a Person, not a force
What is the Holy Spirits mission? To reveal Jesus. What is Jesus missionto reveal the
Father. What about the Fatherto send Jesus and the Holy Spirit so we can come to Him.
Perfect Harmony. They never had a crisis management meeting in Heaven. They never tried
to sit down and work things out. They never had a power struggle amongst themselves.
The Holy Spirit gives gifts for use in ministry and empowers effective ministry
The Holy Spirit is a distinct Person within the Godhead, not a force or an it

The Holy Spirit
His Acts
1) He teaches you things about God and yourself. John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy
Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to
your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
2) He tells the truth. John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the
Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
3) He guides. John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth:
for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew
you things to come.
4) He convinces. John 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness,
and of judgment:
5) He prays for you. Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not
what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit Himself maketh intercession for us with
groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of
the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
6) He commands. Acts 13:2 As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate
me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit was on the scene long before the day of Pentecost
Genesis 1:1-2
Luke 2 :25- 28 . ..Simeon was a righteous and devout man who eagerly awaited the
birth of Jesus . He was led by the Spirit to the temple ..

What All Happened on the Day of Pentecost?
Jesus said it was imperative that He go or the Spirit would not be sent
Jesus felt it important enough for them to wait until the Spirit came to empower them
Jesus own mother needed the baptism of the Holy Spirit to be an effective witness.

The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit was on the scene long before the day of Pentecost
The Holy Spirit gave us the Word of God. 2 Peter 1:20-21 Knowing this
first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men
of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
The Holy Spirit regenerates our spirit when we accept Jesus Christ
into our life. John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

The Holy Spirit
How do we receive the Holy Spirit? Conversion
You must be BORN again (Romans 8:9 now if anyone does not have the Spirit of
Christ , he is not His.
So after repenting and receiving Christ as Savior, you are eligible to receive the
baptism in the Holy Spirit.
BY FAITH-"" (Galatians 3:26,27). For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ
Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ
Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the
name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar
off, as many as the Lord our God will call" (Acts 2:38,39)
God sends His Spirit to us. Galatians 4 :4-6.and because you are sons ,God
sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts. ,
Romans 8:16 .. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are
children of God.
So Jesus said to them ( His disciples) again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent
me, I also send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to
them, "Receive the Holy Spirit" (John 20:21,22)

The Holy Spirit
Evidence of the Spirit- Baptism of the Spirit
Speaking in unknown tongue
Then the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one
place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind,
and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to
them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave
them utterance" (Acts 2:1-4).

Fifty days later ( the disciples) they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit
in the upper room. Jews then came to Jerusalem for the feast of
Pentecost, heard the 120 speaking, declaring the wonders of God in their
own national languages. Others could not understand them and said they
were drunk Acts 2:14-18

The Holy Spirit
Please note that receiving the Holy Spirit upon conversion
and being baptized in the Holy Spirit are two separate and
distinct experiences.

We have Paul receiving Jesus on the road to Damascus. He often referred
to the Damascus Road experience as his conversion experience. However,
he did not receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit until three days later
when Ananias laid hands on him.
"And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands
on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the
road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be
filled with the Holy Spirit" (Acts 9:17).
Nothing is mentioned about Paul speaking in tongues here, but in 1
Corinthians 14:18 Paul says "I thank God that I speak in tongues more
than you all."

The Holy Spirit
What does the baptism of the Holy Spirit do for You?.
1. You speak to God.
"For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him;
however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries" (1 Corinthians 14:2).
2 You are edified or charged up spiritually.
"He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church" (1
Corinthians 14:4).
"But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit," (Jude
1:20).
3. You are to pray --- sing in your prayer language.
"For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is the conclusion
then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit,
and I will also sing with the understanding" (1 Corinthians 14:14,15).
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in
psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord" (Colossians
3:16)
"speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in
your heart to the Lord," (Ephesians 5:19).

The Holy Spirit
4. Helps us with Spiritual Warfare-When you put on the armor of God, you are
instructed to pray in your prayer language.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the
word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the
saints" (Ephesians 6:10-18).
5. When you don't know how to pray properly about a
situation, you can pray in the Spirit.
"Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we
ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now
He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for
the saints according to the will of God" (Romans 8:26,27

The Holy Spirit
6. He gives you gifts
and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. There are diversities of gifts, but
the same Spirit.
There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.
word of wisdom through the Spirit,
to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,
to another faith by the same Spirit,
to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,
to another the working of miracles,
to another prophecy,
to another discerning of spirits,
to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the
same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills" (1 Corinthians
12:1-11).
7. The baptism in the Holy Spirit is the rest and refreshing promised in Old Testament prophesy,
promised by Isaiah hundreds of years before Pentecost.
For it is with stammering lips and another tongue he will speak to this people, to whom he said,
"This is the rest with which you may cause the weary to rest," and "This is the refreshing"; yet they
would not hear" (Isaiah 28:11-12).

The Holy Spirit

8. Your prayer language is a permanent gift, but the gifts of the Holy Spirit are
supernaturally given to individuals as the Spirit wills; so we cannot claim any
permanent gifts of the Holy Spirit.

9. You may be used in a church in a ministry gift.
"And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third
teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of
tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of
miracles? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way" (1
Corinthians 12:28-31).
