collaboration
By: Clark Porcher
Working with peers can help you with dealing with
projects.
Peers can tell you what is working well and not so
well.
It can make it easier to do hard jobs.
Working with Peers
Sometimes its hard to find time to meet up with your
peers outside of class but the use of digital tools can
help.
Wikis offer writers the opportunity for peer review.
Many teachers use a course-management system o
offer courses either completely or partially online.
Using Digital tools for Peer Review
Problems that can occur with dealing with peers are taking you
out your comfort zone, different personalities, and questioning
your thinking.

Ways to make the most out of your work with your peer: Listen
empathically to your group members comment and questions.
Assign roles to members of the group. Provide positive and
constructive feedback. Keep the group small.
Strategies for working with peers
Effectively
Define success as a group and ways to achieve it.
Define success for the group
Potential problems include a group member who
dominates a discussion, doesn't carry a fair share of
the load, or misses a deadline. If a problem does
occur deal with it immediately.
Develop a plan for dealing with
group problems
Before the group begins working decide what you
want to accomplish in the session-your short term
goal.
If the group works multiple times together decide on
a long-term goal to achieve by the last session.

Set Short-term and Long-term Goals
Identify which task needs to be completed along the
way ,as well as a time frame for completing it.
Write down who is responsible for each task, and
make certain that each member of the group has a list
of everyones responsibilities.

Develop a plan for completing the
project.
Group meetings can be held face-to-face, by phone,
or in online chat rooms.
For each meeting, establish an agenda and identify
what each person needs to do before the meeting.
Make a calendar of group meetings
Whether or not collaborative meetings ae held in person,
digital tools can support the process.
Agree on a sequence for working on each digital file to
avoid duplication of effort.
For revising, use the track-changes and comment features
of your word processing software.
When you name files, include the current date in the file
name, such as rental_paper_10-18-12.
