Art Forms in Ancient Egypt

Fashion
clothing was lightweight and
made from linen because of
the hot, dry climate
mens wear: short kilts with a
band of cloth around
shoulders
womens wear: long, fitted
dresses
jewelry was a popular
accessory worn for
ornamentation and
spiritual/magical protection
Art
starting point of western style art
used symbolism in art to show viewpoints
made statues, paintings, pottery, jewelry, sculptures etc.
used Frontalism in paintings
art styles such as Frontalism have been kept up for thousands of years
much of the artwork done by the Egyptians was of Gods, Goddesses and
Pharaohs.
Music
important to Ancient
Egyptian life
had specific Gods for music
(Hathor and Beth)
found in temples, palaces,
farms, tombs etc.
developed and varied
instruments such as, hand-held
drums, rattles and castanets
musicians had different ranks in
society; they were determined
by skill and places the
musicians performed

Drama

based plays of different subjects
most popular stories involved Gods and religion
plays were performed in public; there were no special places
allocated for performances though
plays also included music and dance
Dance
used dance to express joy
in life
created complex routines
involving acrobatics, slow-
movements and mimetic
expressions
displayed at social
gatherings
influenced by Nubian
traditions
men and women would have
never been seen dancing
together


Architecture
best known for contributions to architecture; the pyramids
pyramids are enormous structures built as tombs for pharaohs
it takes thousands of workers many years to build a pyramid
pyramids are made from stone, limestone and granite blocks
-each block weighed around 2.5 tons each!
workers could suffer from heat stroke, insect bites, break bones
etc.
Workers were compensated in forms of food (bread, beer, onions,
garlic, barley/wheat seed), feasts and wine
The Great Pyramids and the most famous, were built for three
pharaohs, Khufu, Khafre and Cheops
-located at the Giza plateau
-took 20 yrs. to build
