THEORY
BATCH SEDIMENTATION

Characterized by the formation
of different zones. A zone of
essentially clarified liquid.

BATCH SEDIMENTATION
Zones:
(A) Forms immediately below the surface
of the liquid mass. Below this zone is
the suspension zone
(B) Where essentially free settling occurs.
Interface between zones A and B. At
the bottom of the mass is a solid-rich
zone
BATCH SEDIMENTATION
Zones:
(C)AB and BC interfaces meet so that there
are only two zones, this is called the
critical point.
(D) The compression zone contains all the
settleable particles. The height of the
compression zone decreases to an
asymptotic value as time approaches
infinity
Uniform Concentration Clear Liquid
Variable Size and
Concentration Zone
Coarse Solid
Sufficient Area must be provided to ensure that the
specified solids flux does not exceed the capacity of the
rate - limiting layer.
Settling velocity is proportional to the
suspended solids concentration
Critical settling point the point at which a
single distinct interface forms between
clear liquid and sediment
Batch Test results clearly show that the
settling velocity decreasing with
increasing concentration
The rate of descent of the solid-liquid
interface is a function of time

Have enough space
while shaking the
tubes.
Hold the cover of the
tubes while shaking to
avoid spillage.
Shake the tubes well.
Start and End at the
same time.
Dont forget to plug
the socket and TURN
ON THE LIGHT to aid
in the observation of
the zones.

REMINDERS

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
Allow slurries to stand
undisturbed
Measure the height of
the interface at a
convenient time interval
(2-3 mins)
Allow slurries to stand for
24 hours to obtain final
compaction reading.
Record the results.
EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
Measure initial heights
of the slurries in the
tubes.
Shake the tubes
thoroughly to promote
uniform dispersion of
solids
Mount the tubes to the
stand all at the same
time.
Settling velocities for all sedimentation
tubes
