The Question

How green does your


garden grow?


Our group is working towards changing the


worldview associated with a garden; a


garden is not limited to organized
production of vegetables, fruits and herbs
maintained by hours of weeding and
replanting.
The Problem
The ICES Williams garden is
currently a dead space, and it

reflects poorly on the college and on ICES.

The current space shows disregard and


lack of commitment from the parties
involved.
Its exclusive use prevents student interest

and education, especially due to the fence


surrounding the space.
The worldview that underlies this problem

is that a traditional garden, run by


students, is too difficult to sustain in a
collegiate setting.
The Mission
 We want to create a micro-
forest – a place for relaxation, for
becoming one with nature. Our goal is to
transform the Williams ICES garden into a
forest and medicinal herb garden, which
will allow the student population to
interactively learn about this ‘new’ idea of
gardening. Not only will the students gain
knowledge, they will have a
beautiful place to sit as well as a few
natural and healthy snacks to munch
on.
The Plan
The Marketing
We will use social marketing to
generate support and student
interest.
Flyers and our blog will combat

internal barriers, such as lack of


knowledge.
We also hope to utilize “Intercom” as

a portal for garden updates food


availability.

strategy is to promote the garden


The Survey
A survey has been

used to receive
students’ ideas prior
to implementing our
garden plan.

The Connections
 We linked our project to some topics that have been
discussed in class.

• The garden (and other projects like it) should be part


of the IC environmental policy that provides the
framework for sustainable development at Ithaca
College.
• The garden also relates to the reading about
worldviews. It would encourage a ‘human and
environment connection’ worldview because the
garden could build a relationship with students and
nature. It would also teach people about the limited
nature of natural resources and encourage
knowledge about sustainability.
• It also links to the VandanaShiva video because the
garden could create a sense of culture and place. It
would be an open source of knowledge for all
members of the Ithaca College community.
The Future

Support for the garden needs to be rebuilt in


order for a new one to flourish.
In order to ensure consistency within the

students working on the garden and support


for the project it would be most effective to
create a group focused on that particular
space within ICES.
A student group would allow for:

• recruiting from the student body


• meetings to keep the line of communication
open
• steady funding through ICES, an established
organization
