Introduction
Since independence, the health care system in India has
been expanded and modernised considerably, with
dramatic improvements in life expectancy and the
availability of modern health care facilities and better
training of medical personnel.

At the same time, however, much remains to be done.
With the increasing cost of health services and medical
bills which a common man cannot afford, this class of
insurance has a growing market. It is estimated that a
family spends an average of 10% of its monthly income on
health care.

Phases

1912: Health insurance introduced when the first insurance
act was passed.

1947: In 1947, the Bhore Committee Report make
recommendations for the improvement of health care
services in India.

1948: The central government introduced the employees
State Insurance Scheme (ESIS) for blue-collar workers
employed in the private sector.

1986: Mediclaim was introduced, started by government
insurance companies in 1986

1999: Marked the beginning of a new era for health
insurance in the Indian context. With IRDA, the insurance
sector was opened to private and foreign participation.

2003: Introduction of UHIS early attempts by
government to introduce health insurance for informal
sector. UHIS was a hospitalization indemnity product
voluntarily purchased from any state-owned insurer at a
heavily subsidized price (e.g., Rs. 165, less than US$4 a
year).

On 2001, the Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance was given the
IRDA (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority)
certification of Registration for conducting the Life
Insurance business (which also included the Health
Insurance business) in the country. Bajaj Allianz India is
headquartered in Pune. The company has its offices in 200
towns all over India.

Exclusion

There shall be a waiting period of 4 years for pre-existing
diseases.

All diseases/injuries existing at the time of proposing this
insurance.

Any disease contracted during the first 30 days of
commencement of the policy.

Certain diseases such as hernia, piles, cataract (liability
restricted upto 10% of SI, max. upto Rs. 35,000), sinusitis
shall be covered after a waiting period of 2 years.
