Sacraments
Introduction
what it means to be a priest.
Leader of a parish or church community?
A dispenser of the sacraments?
A pastor?
An important aspect of my experience of
the priestly life is celebrating the
Eucharist.
I find being a priest so many-sided that
it can't be defined satisfactorily in
terms of tasks and duties.

Introduction
The Catholic Church counts ordination
as one of the seven sacraments.
Martin Luther protested against the special
status of the priest
For Luther, the priesthood of believers
consists primarily in the free access
which everyone has to God.
You don't need the special function of a priest
to reach God. Luther sees the priestly task of
believers as residing especially in praise of
God.

Introduction
For me, the
priest is an
archetypal
image or
symbol.

I. The Theology of the Priest
The priest is endowed with a
special power either from birth
or by means of a special
consecration.
He has a numinous quality.
He is the locus of a power to
which we ourselves have no
access.

Con-celebration of the Eucharist
First blessing

b. Consecration of bishop
Priests are the bishop's 'co-workers',
and participate in his priestly office. The
ordination, or consecration, of a bishop
has the same structure as that of a
priest. This makes clear that this bishop
is now included in the
college(collegium)of bishops.
The rite of anointing is somewhat
different, too. Since his hands have
been anointed already during his
ordination as a priest, the bishop's head
is anointed now.
c. Ordination of deacon
In the course of the history of the
Church, the diaconate became a
mere intermediate stage on the way to
priestly ordination.
The ordination of deacons has a
similar structure to that of priests.
They are to assist priests in the
celebration of the Eucharist and to
preach the word of God.
d. Other forms of ordination
Ordination of virgins
Ordination of abbots and abbesses
Ordination for other offices in the
Church
Ordination for secular professions

Conclusion
A priest's work is : celebrating the
Eucharist, celebrating the feast of
life in baptism, consoling those who
mourn, freeing and reassuring those
who are burdened with guilt,
accompanying people on their
spiritual way, preaching the word of
God and interpreting its relevance to
life as it actually is.
