The human species use of technology began with the
conversion of natural resources into simple tools.

The word technology can be used to refer to a collection
of simple tools techniques. In this context, it is the current
state of humanitys knowledge of how to combine
resources to produce desired products, to solve problems
and to fulfil needs or satisfy wants.

Reliance on Technology for Basic Needs

Food
Water
Healthcare
Sanitation
Food
We rely on technology to give us the staples we consume
daily. For example, rice and milk.

In Australia, farmers use laser-guided land levelling
techniques to prepare the ground for rice production. The
seeds are sown by aircraft.

Experienced agricultural pilots use satellite guidance
technology to broadcast seed accurately over the fields.

The production of milk is heavily reliant on machines.
Automatic Milking Systems milk the cows.

Machines pasteurize the milk for safe consumption and
even feeding of cows has been automated.

Water

In Singapore, we rely heavily on technology to purify
water so that it is fit for our consumption.

NEWater, the famous water project, involves treating
waste water through micro filtration, reverse osmosis and
ultraviolet technologies.

There are also water filtration systems for the home.
For example, the Diamond Energy Water, which are
designed to provide cleaner and healthier water.

Sanitation
Sanitation generally refers to the provision of facilities
and services for the safe disposal o human urine and
faeces.

We rely heavily on complicated technologies to dispose
of human waste.

There are toilets, sewers, and wastewater treatment
systems in place which make our homes and
environment clean to live in.
In the absence of sanitation, human health will be
greatly affected. Poor sanitation contributes to 1.5
million child deaths from diarrhoea each year.
Healthcare
Healthcare is the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of
disease, illness, injury and other physical and mental
impairments in humans.

Healthcare is delivered by practitioners in medicine,
chiropractic, dentistry, nursing and other care providers. It
refers to the work done in providing primary care,
secondary care and tertiary care, as well as in public
health.

The medical industry is heavily reliant on technology to
provide the tools and equipment needed to save lives.

Surgeons use surgical navigation and imaging systems
to visualize the patients anatomy.

Also to track the location of their surgical instruments in
relation to the anatomy, navigate therapy placement and
confirm tumour resection.
Lastly, nurses use computers to obtain information
about the patients past and ongoing treatments and
medications and the results to ensure the best care
is provided.
