Goal
Provides basic concepts of
operating system with emphasis on
DOS and Windows desktop operating
systems. This course is designed to
provide a framework for future studies
of computer engineering.
Objective
The course should enable the
student to install , configure,
administer and support a desktop
(WinXX) operating system.

Outcomes
Prepare a desktop operating system installation plan
Prepare system and disk optimization and backup plans
based on user criteria
Prepare user profiles based on environment
requirements
Customize a users desktop based on user and
environment requirements
Prepare a directory (folder) structure to fit a users
needs
Differentiate between multi-user, multi-tasking and
single-tasking operating systems
Outcomes
Identify the functions of RAM, ROM, cache,
virtual memory and secondary storages, how
they are differentiated, and how the operating
system manages them
Identify basic command level commands used
to manage directories (folder) and files
Create and execute basic batch files

How do computers work?
There are three factors involved in a computing
environment:
Hardware
Software
Peopleware
Peopleware
These are humans who either use the programs
or create the programs. The people who create
programs are called programmers.

Hardware
These are all parts of the computer that can be
touched:

keyboard
monitor
CPU

Software
These are programs that instructs the computer
on how to use the hardware. It can be

Applications Programs (Microsoft Office,
AutoCAD, NBA 2K14)
Operating System (like Windows XP, Linux,
Mac OSX)

The BIOS
Stands for Basic Input Output System
boot the computer by providing a basic set of
instructions
perform POST (Power-On Self Test)
load the operating system after turning on the
computer
