Questionnaire

analysis
For more research and planning we made a
questionnaire so we would be able to see what
the majority of people surveyed would like to
see in a music video and what they enjoy about
certain things to do with music videos. I posted
the link onto Facebook and Twitter as I felt
these two social media platforms would be
were there is a wide variety of answers that
could be given from a variety of different age
groups. my survey got responses from 17
people, of which all were from various age
groups and opinions on music. This would give
us a wide and varied opinion and therefore
unbiased survey answers.
We conducted this survey as we wanted to
manipulate the answers in a way that connotes
the way we should interpret our music video to
attract an audience. We used open and closed
questions so we could gain both qualitative and
quantitative data.
17 people had responded to the survey, this
means that we would get a variety of answers.
Question 1
The first question asked was are you make
or female. This is because the answers will
separate the viewpoint they have on certain
aspects to do with music videos e.g.
women being sexualised, which links into
Laura Mulveys male gaze theory as women
being sexualised would appeal to a male
demographic however, it wouldnt appeal to
a female demographic. What would appeal
to a female demographic is something that
they can relate to e.g. elements of a
relationship. This relates to personal
relationships in Blumler and Katz uses and
gratifications theory as the audience would
feel as though they are involved in the
music video. This would make them more
inclined to watch the music video. As
42.11%that answered the survey were
female and 58.88 were male, this is a fairly
almost equal survey which therefore
accounts for both the male and female
opinion respectively.
Question 2
The second question was what is your
age? this was aimed at the audience to
see if the majority of people that filled
out the questionnaire were in the age
group that I am aiming the music video
at. This age group was teenagers to
young adults. Combined, these two age
groups take up 78% of all the survey
answers. This means that the opinion of
our target audience will be represented
more in the questionnaire and therefore
we can use the suggestions and
opinions from the questionnaire to help
with our research and planning as it will
be representative of our primary
demographic. This suggests that the
people in this group will hold similar
ideologies and will fall into the same
types of psychographic profiles.
Question 3
Our third question was How often do
you watch music videos? This helps us
to understand which psychographic
profiles our primary audience will fall
into. Originally our group thought that
through the proliferation of hardware
and content, the audience will access
music videos more and become more of
an active audience in Gauntletts web
2.0 theory. However, when we
reviewed the results of our survey, we
found that this wasnt true as 50% of
answers said that they watch music
videos for less than an hour a week or
never. This means that the majority of
the audience are not actively seeking
the music videos of the artist.
Question 4
The next question was how often do
you watch music videos on TV? this was
so we could see whether our target
audience was passive as they werent
actively seeking out the music video.
We found that the audience were more
likely to watch music videos on TV.
We found that the majority of the
results showed the audience watch
music videos on TV more than once a
month. This connotes that the audience
take on more of a passive role when it
comes to watching music videos.
On the other hand a lot of answered
were that they never watch music
videos on TV which suggests that they
arent interested in the music video but
just the artists song on its own.
Question 5
The next question was What is the most
common way that you watch music videos?
This was to see what was the most popular
way that people watch music videos so we
would be able to cater to the needs of the
audience and therefore make our music
video available to that platform that is most
seen by our target audience.
We found that the majority used YouTube to
access a music video.
Therefore we will use YouTube to publish
our music video as it is the most common
way that music videos are seen by the
audience.
This then engages their interest as they
would see the new music video on YouTube
and wonder what it is like, This links into
Barthes enigma theory as it makes the
audience question the music video so they
will watch it to find out the answer and gain
information on it (surveillance-Blumler and
Katz)
Question 6
We then asked what is your favourite genre
of music? we got a varied range of answers.
However, pop and R&B were the slight
leaders of the choices, the next popular was
other of which was indie hip hop and rap
music.
The most popular genres are quite current
and modern genres of music which also fit
in with our genre as they are all genres of
music that have gone high up in music
charts, which the mainstreamer
psychographic profile fits into.
Therefore, by watching the music video they
would escape into that world as it is similar
to their genres and they would then identify
that music as a genre that they enjoy. This
relates to Blumler and Katz diversion and
personal identity.
Question 7
When asked why they enjoyed this genre
the answers included; catches my attention,
the lyrics and the way that the guitar is
played, it has a large variety. These answers
all help our research as we have chosen a
song that has honesty in the lyrics such as
we can burn brighter than the sun. From
this the audience can identify this with
themselves as they may feel that they need
to live their life better. This relates to
Blumler and Katz personal identity.
As the genre they like catches their
attention, we will try to male our music
video replicate this as we will try to catch
the attention of our target audience. To do
this we will try to include narrative sections
that may appeal to some of the
psychographic profiles.

Question 8
We asked what they would enjoy most in a
pop music video and the top 4 most popular
were that the character enjoy themselves,
the artist is seen in the music video, Bright
colours and a clear, structured narrative.
We will try to replicate this in our music
video as we want to appeal to the majority
of people that we surveyed. This means that
we will attract our audience as our music
video will then catch the audiences
attention and draw them into watching our
music video.
We want to show our characters having a
lot of fun and enjoying themselves as we
feel that people of this age group could
relate to it. This relates to Blumler and Katz
personal relationships as they target
audience could feel a connection to the
characters in the music video.
The lowest popular ones were break up,
which we found would be clich if we added
it into the narrative of the music video.
Question 9
We then asked if they thought music videos
were important to the artists success and
why. We found that the majority thought
that it was important as it makes the video
more accessible and enjoyable. It also bring
the lyrics to life in a way that the audience
may not have envisaged themselves. This
may take the form of an abstract video.
However, the oppositional reading (Hall) is
that the music video doesnt help the
promotion of the artist as the music video
could be boring or make the viewers
confused and then make them question the
lyrics.
Also, if women have been sexualised in it
then it could cause debates as well as the
loss of fans of the music (Laura Mulvey Male
gaze). However, the stars actions away from
the music could also have a negative effect.
E.g. Lady GaGas decisions have lost her
followers.
Question 10
As the final question we asked what
their favourite type of music video was.
The most popular answer was Narrative
with performance which were also the
other two most voted. Abstract wasnt
voted by anyone and so this type of
music video isnt favoured by the target
audience as it could be considered
confusing.
We have planned our music video to be
both narrative and performance based
as this was a way to break up the
narrative so that we could make room
for personal relationship with the artist
when she is seen singing directly to the
camera (Blumler and Katz)
