1.1 Background of study
For Indonesia, English is a foreign language where this
language could be obtained through a learning process. It
Could not be separated from the world of English
education. It is an important point for any student to learn
the knowledge of language while they are at school.
Nevertheless there are still many students who are not
interested in learning English with a variety of reasons
such as boring and too difficult to understand, therefore
the teacher should have a creative way of teaching English
in order to motivate each student and make the learning
process better.

Listening skill is one of the important elements in the
language skills to be able to understand every word in the
English language. Listening skill is an understanding of
what is to be heard either directly or indirectly such as
through media such as songs in English. Learning
activities could be done by listening to an interesting
learning media that could make the learning process more
effective.
Based on the observation of practice teaching and the
learning process in the SMPN 3 Palangka Raya especially
in class VIII, the English teachers were teaching without
using any instructional media, but only with the
conventional process such as giving the definition of a
certain text at the beginning of learning and continued
with the example of problems and then concluding the
learning with exercises.

These learning activities made students become less interested
in learning english, they talked with friends during the lessons,
disturbed each other and were lack of focus in the study. They
often asked permission to go out of the class. Learning
activities such as this led the students less interested in the
English language teaching and learning process, they regarded
it simply as a routine activity that must be followed only when
learning in school.

The media is needed to deliver material of teaching. Song is an
audio medium. It is capable of being a source of learning and
could convey information and messages to overcome problems
above. This is in accordance with the books of educational
media (2009: 118) where the audio media will be very effective
when using sound and voice as able to stimulate the listener to
use imagination and fantasy so that the listener can visualize
the messages conveyed. therefore to make the teaching and
learning process be effective, so song as media can be use as an
alternative to attract the student attention and participation at
class.

Based on the above explanation, the writer wants to do a
research entitled EFFECT OF SONGS ON THE
LISTENINGS ACHIEVEMENT OF RECOUNT
TEXT OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF
SMPN 3 PALANGKA RAYA.

3.2.3 Data Analysis Procedure
The procedures in analyzing data are as follows :
1. The writer presents the numerical data on the table
2. Collecting the tabulating scores from pretest and posttest
3. Analyzing data, to calculate the effectiveness of treatment
using the formula Arikunto (2010: 125) T-test frame :

T=

Where :

Md = Mean from deviation (d) between posttest and pretest.
xd = difference deviation with mean deviation
N = Number of students
df = Degree of freedom is (N-1)
4. Testing the hypothesis whether it will be accepted or
rejected. The result of the calculating of the test based
on the t-test formula, will be based to compare it to t-test
score in the table at the significant of 5% degree of
freedom (df) N-1, where N is the number of students, to
determine the hypothesis will be accepted or not.

5. Taking the conclusion.
If t-test > t-table Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted
If t-test < t-table Ho is accepted and Ha is rejected

3.3 Population and Sample

grade students of SMPN 3 Palangka Raya in
academic year 2014/2015
3.3.2. Sample
This study is using random sampling. Where in sampling
technique to choose the sample by means of a lottery from
the population is by dividing them into several groups
(classes). The writer will takes only one class of the
population of the eighth grade students as the sample of
this research.
The steps are as follows:
1. The writer will write down each class name in a rolled
paper.
2. The writer will put them into glass and shake it.
3. A rolled paper which will be out of glass will be the
Sample of the study.

3.4 Instrumentation
3.4.1 Instrumentation Development
The instrument of the research is a test in listening of
recount text that will be used in pretest and protest.
The pretest is intended to determine the ability of
students in the early stages before giving treatment
for three times while the posttest is given to measure
the students achievement in listening recount text
mastery after the treatment has been given.

3.4.2 Instrumentation Try Out
In this study the instrument should be tried out first. The
purpose of try out is to determine the time allocation, find
out whether the instrumentation format will be understood
by students and to give evidence to support the
instruments validity and reliability.
Procedures of the try out are as follows :
1. Preparing the instrument.
2. giving tests to students.
3. Explaning how to do the test
4. Determining the time allocation
5. Collecting and giving score the students answers

6. Determining the reliability of the test with analyzing the result
of the study. The writer will be used the formula to know the
level of difficulty of the multiple-choice test as follow:

P=

Where:
P = The difficulty index
B = The number of students who answer the questions
correctly
JS= The total number of students
Arikunto (2002:208)

Difficulty Index Criteria
0,00 P < 0,30 Difficult
0,30 P< 0,70 Medium
0,70 P 1,00 Easy
3.5 Instrumentation Validity
Instrument that used to obtain the data should be valid,
according to Sugiyono (2008: 173) Valid berarti
instrumen tersebut dapat digunakan untuk mengukur
apa yang seharusnya diukur. A based on this statement
an instrument is important in the evaluation in this
study the instrument is the form of mulitple choice test,
and the test item must be appropriate from the material
that will be taught to the students. In this study there are
two kinds that are used:

3.5.1 Content Validity
This study used content validity to measure an
achievement test. Based on the topic, tool of measurement
in the form of tests that represent the principal subjects
concerned and based on the syllabus of 2013 from SMP 3
Palangka Raya. In it, the writer uses songs a the media in
recount text to determine listening mastery of any content
of the message in the text.

Kind of Test Criteria of Text
Written Test
(Multiple Choice)
Recount text in songs for
listening only fousing on
content of the message.
3.5.2 Construct Validity
This study used construct validity, According to
Toendan (2013:113) It refers to the extent to which the
results of a data collection process can be interpreted
in terms of underlying psychological construct. Based
on the statement above the content validity indicates
the suitability of the test with the student's ability. In
this case of the study reflects a particular construct,
That is, the students' ability to comprehend listening
to the songs sung in recount text.

3.6 Instrument Reliability
The reliability of the study could be proven if the result of
the high confidence level, this means such tests can
provide results that remained the same when tested to the
same subject in different times. The reliability of the
research instrument in the form of multiple choice is
tested using formula KR20 (Arikunto 2009:100):

Where:
r
11
: Reliability sought
p : Proportion of students who answer the question
correctly
q : Proportion of students who answer the question
incorrectly
n : Question Items

pq
: Multiplication of p and q
S : Standard Deviation of Test

Reliability Criteria
0,00 r11 < 0,30 Low
0,30 r11 < 0,70 Medium
0,70 r11 1,00 High
3.7 Research Methodology
Research Design
The form of this research is pre-experimental by using
one-group pretest-posttest design. The schematics
representation or the design is as follows:

Where:
O
1
= Pre-test
X = Treatment
O
2
= Post Test
Sugiyono (2008:110-111)

O
1
X O
2

According to the diagram above, the writer only focuses
on one group on the case. First, before giving treatment
the writer will give pretest to a sample group of research.
Then, after doing treatment the writer will give posttest.

In this study, the writer will give treatment by displaying
the audio of Recount text with songs. The material of this
study focuses on information contained in recount text.
After displaying the audio, the writer will give students
written test (multiple choice) to measure the purpose of
the study. To find out the effect of the treatment, the
students will be given a posttest by the writer. Then, in
order to see the effect of teaching recount text with songs
in listening the writer will compare the result of students
pretest and posttest scores. Finally, drawing the conclusion
and make decision from the result.

3.7.1 Variable of the study

There are two variables in this study, they are as follows :

1. Dependent variable : Students listening
achievement (result) in recount
text.
2. Independents : Learning with songs.

3.7.2 Validity of The Study
The validity of this study will be concerned with the
guidelines in undertaking research. The validity of the
study is as follows:

1. This method of this study is pre-experimental
research.
2. The data of this study will be taken from sample of the
study that is the eighth grade students of SMPN 3
Palangka Raya in academic year 2014/2015.
3. This study will use instrument in form of recount text
with songs
