INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS TOURISM:
According to Tourism Society of England, Tourism is the
temporary short term movement of people to destination
outside the places , where they normally live and work,
and their activities during the stay at each destination. It
includes movement for all purposes
According to International Association of Scientific
Expert in Tourism, Tourism in terms of particular
activities selected by choice and undertaken outside the
home environment.
ABOUT MAJULI:
Majuli is one of the largest river Island in the world.
Majuli is the place of numerous VAISNAV Monasteries
of Assam called SATRA.
Majuli is the heart of VAISNAVISM.
The population of Majuli includes Brahmin, Kayastha ,
Mising , Deori etc.

PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS
OF TOURISM IN MAJULI
Problems :
1. Lack of attention from government
2. Transportation system
3. Lack of hotels and inns
4. Lack of entertainment system
Prospects :

For the development of tourism industry the following measures can be
taken:
1. The water transport system and road and road transport system
needed to be improved.
2. The condition of the tourists lodges , resorts etc can be improved.
3. The traditional food, clothes, culture etc can be made available for the
tourists which will help in the development of the economy of the
place.
4. A cultural centre could be established in order to exhibit the cultural
resources of the Satras and the tribes dwelling in Majuli.
5. Birds observation places could be established.
6. Provisions could be made for the rafting and yachting for the tourist.
CONCLUSION
Majuli has the prospects to be a world class tourist
place. Efforts has been made to give the status of world
heritage site to Majuli by government and other
association. Some international tourists are also
extending their helping hand for the development of
Majuli and its tourism.
