EDUCATION

MASS MEDIA
-comprises the institutions and techniques by which
specialized groups employ technological devices
like Press, Radio, Television, Computer, Films,
Internet etc. to disseminate knowledge: to large
heterogeneous as well as widely dispersed
audience.
-are tools for the transfer of information, concepts,
and ideas to both general and specific audiences.

ROLES OF MASS MEDIA IN

EDUCATION
store information until it is needed or
wanted.
distribute it over distances to reach the
student wherever he happens to be, instead
of bringing him to the teacher.
present the information to the student
through various senses and in many modes.
give the student the opportunity to reach
the material and respond in many ways
transmit messages to receiver.
not only inform but persuade.
used for entertainment and commercial as well
as non commercial.
reach large number of people such as television,
newspaper, radio, cinema etc.

Impact of Mass Media in Education

Positive Impact
Enhanced education.
There are two major approaches to
using media and technology in schools.
First, students can learn from media
and technology, and second, they can
learn with media and technology.

Negative Impact
Makes student dull and lazy.
No in-depth learning and proper
research.
Encourages mass learning without
quality learning.
Teachers/students have become
duplicators of Wikipedia.
Media has become their guru, master
and teacher.
It poisons the learners with various
unethical or indecent contents in print
or video forms.
There is a connection between
excessive Internet use and depression,
drug abuse, isolation, and suicide.

Conclusion:
The main function of education is communicating
of knowledge, skills and attitudes. The mass media are
known to have great potential in communicating these
effectively. The mass communication has opened a new
dimension in the horizon of human world. By
application of various media in the field of education,
millions of people have come to acquire new ideas,
philosophies, approaches and attitudes.
