Introducing Windows
Preinstallation Environment (PE)
Windows PE 4.0:
o Is a striped-down operating system
o Is based on the Windows 8 kernel
o Enables system administrators to boot a
computer with no operating system installed and
initiate the operating system setup process

6
Windows PE
Advantages of Windows PE compared to
MS-DOS:
o Native 32-bit or 64-bit support
o Native 32-bit or 64-bit driver support
o Internal networking support
o Internal NTFS support
o Scripting language support
o Flexible boot options

Understanding Windows
PE Limitations
Windows PE was never intended to function as
a full-time operating system
Experienced rapid deployment and execution
Limitations include:
o Does not support the entire collection of Win32 APIs
o Automatically stops and reboots the computer after
72 hours of continuous operation
o Drive letter assignments you create in a Windows PE
session are not persistent between sessions
o You must use 32-bit version of Windows PE to install 32-
bit version of Windows 8; 64-bit version of Windows PE
to install 64-bit version Windows 8
2013 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
10
Understanding Windows
PE Limitations
o Registry keys are reset to default values each
time the operating system restarts
o Will not fit on a floppy disk
Is possible to create bootable Windows PE CD-
ROM, DVD-ROM, and USB flash drive
o Does not have file server or Remote Desktop
capabilities
o Does not support Microsoft .NET Framework or the
Common Language Runtime (CLR), Windows on
Windows 32 (WOW32), Windows on Windows 64
(WOW64), Virtual DOS Machine (VDM), OS/2, or
POSIX subsystems
2013 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
11
Using Windows PE
Windows PE is useful for scenarios that
require a basic operating system with
minimal resource usage.
Can be used for:
o Custom deployments
o System troubleshooting
o System recovery

Understanding the Windows
8 Startup Process
The Windows 8 startup procedure is vastly
different from those of Windows XP and
other NT-based Windows versions.

components found in Windows 8 and the
Windows XP components they replace.

Lesson 2: Installing Windows 8

Clean Installation
A clean installation is the simplest way to
deploy Windows 8 on
o a new computer, or
o a computer with a partition that you are willing
to reformat (losing all of the data on the partition
in the process)

Installing Third-Party
Device Drivers
The Where do you want to install Windows? page
lists the partitions on all the hard disks that the Setup
program can detect with its default drivers.
If the hard disk drives in the computer are
connected to a third-party controller, rather than
the one integrated into the motherboard, the list of
partitions might appear empty, and you will have to
supply a driver before the Setup program can see
the disks.
Check the controller manufacturers website for a
driver supporting Windows 8. If none is available,
use the most recent Windows 7 driver.

Working with Installation
Partitions
In addition to installing disk drivers, the Where
do you want to install Windows? page enables
you to create, manage, and delete the
partitions on your disks.
Clicking the Drive options (advanced) button
on the page causes four additional buttons to
appear. The buttons have these functions:
o Delete
o Extend
o Format
o New

Installing to a VHD
It is possible to install Windows 8 on a virtual
hard disk (VHD) file stored on any one of the
computers physical disks.
When you install Windows 8 on a VHD, it
becomes an alternative boot device to the
standard disk partition installation.
This ability makes it possible to maintain any
number of independent Windows 8
installations on a single computer and boot
into any one as needed.

Upgrading to Windows 8
Lesson 2: Installing Windows 8

Preparing to Upgrade
Consider the following before you perform
any upgrade to Windows 8:
Run Upgrade Assistant
Check hardware compatibility
Search for updated drivers
Check application compatibility
Check disk space
Perform a full backup

Upgrading Windows 8
Editions
If you are running the core Windows 8
product, you might want to upgrade to
Windows 8 Professional.
A Windows 8 Professional user might want to
add the Windows 8 Media Center Pack.
Both the Windows 8 Professional upgrade
and the Windows 8 Media Center Pack are
available through the operating system.
o Use the Add features to Windows 8 control panel.

35
Migrating from Windows
XP or Windows Vista
There is no direct upgrade path from Windows
Vista or Windows XP to Windows 8.
The only way to retain any of your system
information from these earlier operating systems
while installing Windows 8 is to perform a
migration, either side-by-side or wipe-and-load.
If your existing computer is running Windows
Vista or Windows XP, you must install the correct
version of Windows Easy Transfer on the source
computer before you can perform the
migration.

Installing Windows To Go
Lesson 2: Installing Windows 8
2013 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 37
Windows To Go
Windows To Go is a new feature in Windows 8
that enables administrators to deploy system
images on removable USB drives.
When a user plugs a Windows To Go drive into a
remote computer, the system loads the
complete Windows 8 environment from the
removable medium, including applications and
any other data incorporated into the image file.
Once Windows 8 is loaded from the Windows To
Go drive, the storage subsystem on the host
computer is disabled, so that no remnants of
the Windows To Go environment are left on that
computer.
