Ritual of Repentance

December 11, 2009

Ash Ritual
• We have sinned against the Lord. We have shed
the blood of fellow human beings. We have taken
the lives of those made in the image of our God.
• Behold what we have done!
Ash Ritual
• In humble expression of our deep sorrow and
repentance for the sin of our fellow human
beings which has become our own sin, let us
anoint our foreheads with ashes and confess our
sin before the Almighty God who is the Judge of
all the earth.
Ash Ritual
• Let us lament of our sin and mourn and bewail
our wickedness. Let us grieve for those whose
lives we have taken.
• (Each one will dip his/her hand in the ashes and
anoint these on his/her forehead. Expressions of
grief. Wailing and mourning.)

Prayer of Confession
• C: Have mercy on us, O God, according to your
steadfast love; according to your abundant
mercy blot out our transgressions. Wash us
thoroughly from our iniquity, and cleanse us
from our sin! Create in us a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within us. Cast us not
away from your presence, and take not your
Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your
salvation, and uphold us with a willing spirit.
Amen.
