INTRODUCTION
Japanese manufacturing techniques generally approach
productivity with the goal of reducing unnecessary
expenses, waste and time, while increasing production
and efficiency.
Many of the modern Japanese manufacturing techniques
were developed after World War II and peaked in the
1980s.
Large companies such as Toyota are credited with
pioneering many of the manufacturing techniques used
by Japanese companies and these techniques have spread
to non-Japanese companies as well, due to their
effectiveness
KEY PRACTICES
Customer Orientation
Come together to discuss with the management issues related to either quality
control or improvement in production methods.
Voluntarily meet on a regular basis to identify, analyze and solve their problems.
Quality Improvement
Just-in-time
Zero defects
KAIZEN AT TOYOTA
There are two kinds of kaizen activities at Toyota:
kaizen made by the supervisory staff and engineers as
their functions,
that made by workers through the quality circles and
suggestion system.
Cost of each of the parts and a standard time for their
production.
A maintenance team
An assembly line is divided into about ten segments per
function
A large conveyer installed on the ground level permit
workers to operate
Tasks to carry heavy parts also disappeared by installing
automatic or semi-automatic equipment .
FEATURES OF KAIZEN
ADVANTAGES OF JIT.
Lower stock holding means a reduction in storage space which
saves rent and insurance costs
As stock is only obtained when it is needed,
working capital is tied up in stock
There is less likelihood of stock perishing ,becoming obsolete or
out of date.
Avoids the build-up of unsold finished product that can occur
with sudden changes in demand
Less time is spent on checking and re-working the product
of others as the emphasis is on getting the work right first time
