COMPONENTS
OF
ELECTRONICS
As homemakers, we should know
the basic electronic parts and
components and their specific
uses. Electronic components are
those parts of a product used in
electronic processes.

Following are those components:

Resistors Devices made of
materials which resist or
oppose the flow of electric
current. The unit of resistance is
measured in ohms.
As to type, resistors are classified
as:
Fixed resistors where values
are fixed and constant.
Variable resistors where
resistance can change/vary
through manual setting.

According to structure, resistors, are classified

as:
Carbon resistors where resistance is derived
from color coded carbon.
Wirewound resistors- where resistance is
derived from a length of wire wrapped around
a core and covered with an insulating
material.

Capacitors

Electronic
components which
have the ability to
store
electrical
charges or voltages.
Have low resistance
to AC which means
that AC can pass
through them; but
highly resistant to
DC which means
that they can block

TYPES OF CAPACITORS:
According to insulating materials are as follows:

Electrolytic
Mylar
Polyester
Air
Mica
Tantum
Ceramics
Paper

Capacitors
are
also
classified as non-polar
or polarized:
Polarized one terminal
of the capacitor is
positive; the other,
negative, and polarity
is observed.
Non-polar can be
connected in any way
in a circuit, without
observing polarity.

Diodes- semi-conductor devices consisting

of the anode which is positively charged,
and the cathode (k), which is negatively
charged.

Different Kinds of Diodes used in a Circuit:

a.

Rectifier diodes used to rectify and convert an

alternating current to pulsating direct current (
fluctuating direct current).

b . Light emitting diodes works like a rectifier diodes

except that they are used to indicate flow of electricity
through emission of light such as the dancing lights
used in entertainment places.
c. Zener Diodes- used to regulate heat.

A semi-conductor with active and passive

elements used to perform complete
electronic function.

It is used in electronic circuits to introduce

inductance, the tendency to oppose any
change ( increase or decrease ) in the
circuit current.

A device for capturing radio frequencies

from space which are fed into a receiver.

A device which is rated in ampheres used to

protect circuit components from damage
due to overload.

A component used to step up or

down the voltage.

A semi- conductor device with three

electrodes which can function as a switch,
rectifier, amplifier or oscillator.
