A phoneme is a unit of sounds in a


language.
Can be used to make one word different
from another word ;
/t/ = toy
/b/ = boy
The sound /s/ is represented by the
letter s which is called essssss

Blending activities
1. Arm blending
- Using the right hand, pronounce each phonemes as you
places the hand at different point of the left arm, from
top to bottom .
- Blend the phonemes as you move the right hand from
the top of the left arm down to the end
of the hand.

2. Sliding Sounds
- Draw the slide
- Slides and pronounce each letters one by one from top
to bottom and blend the phonemes together.

Segmenting activity
1. Robot Talk
- Ask for volunteer to become a robot
- Whispers to the robot the word for he/she to
segment.
- The others, listen and try to guess the word.

Activities:
1. Teacher pastes the lyric .
2. Pupils repeat the song after teacher.
3. Teacher pastes the words on the board and
distributes the Bingo card to pupils.
4. Teacher says the words and pupils cross out the
correct words. Continue until pupil shout bingo!
5. Revise the sound and their actions /s/, /a/, /t/,
/p/
6. Pupils do oral blending activity. Teacher shows the
picture and ask pupils to articulate /p/ /a/ /t/

7. Teacher shows the letter cards, pupils blend


the sounds and say the word. (example: pat)
8. Teacher explains that there are three sounds
and three letters for the word pat.
Continue with other words. (tap, sat, sap)
9. Teacher shows a word to pupils and pupils
segment it. Repeat with other words.
10.Teacher shows the picture cards and pupils
name the picture and segment the word.

Activities
Set induction
Some pupils are chosen to pick a picture
from a box, then they say the initial
sound of the picture with teachers
guidance.
The pupils take a letter card with
corresponding sound then paste it on
the blackboard.

Step 1
Pupils try to blend 2-3 phonemes to
form a recognizable word with
teachers guidance.
Pupils say out the initial, medial and
final sound that form the word.
Pupils say out the word aloud with
teachers guidance.

Step 2
Blending and segmenting
Pupils are given letter cards with
phoneme written on each paper.
Teacher say the word, then pupils blend
the word using the letter cards.
Pupils segment the word into phonemes.

Step 3
Spelling race Pupils are divided into 2 groups.
Teacher provides a box with letter cards
inside the box.
When teacher show pictures. The first,
second and third pupils from each group
will takes turn to find one letter card from
the box and paste it on the blackboard to
form word based on the picture showed.

2. Teacher shows the letter cards (s, a, t, p) &
pupils do the sounds with actions.
3. Teacher shows the picture cards and pupils
name them.
4. Pupils blend and segment the word cards shown
by teacher.
5. Arrange Us
-Divides pupils into several groups, each group
are given an envelope containing a set of
letters.
-Teacher says the words and pupils arrange the
letter cards to make the words. (Give marks)

6. Lines Race
-Teacher divides pupils into 2 groups and
line up in front of the class. One person
from each group will take turn to write
the words spoken by teacher or picture
shown by teacher. (Give marks)

7. Distributes handout. (Figuring exercise)

Cut the pictures and letter cards to
make a pictionary.
Pupils colour and decorate the booklet.
