Gerund is used by people


automatically in their daily life.
Have you ever heard the using
of gerund in your daily life?

Dancing is her hobby. (Dancing as


gerund)
I will improve my English by learning
grammar. (Learning grammar as gerund
phrase)
Walking is good for health. (Walking as
gerund)

Gerund is the-ing form of verbal that has


function as a noun. Such as; listening,
reading, playing, talking etc. Note that
gerund always end in ing.

Gerund has many functions and can be used


in many situations. There are;
Gerund as subject
Gerund as direct object
Gerund as subjective complement
Gerund as predicate nominative
Gerund as appositive
Gerund as compound
Gerund after word NO
Gerund after possessive adjectives
Gerund after preposition
Gerund after special verbs

Mostly, gerund as a subject is placed at


the beginning of a sentence.
For example;
Listening music is enjoyable.

Travelling makes happy.

Gerunds as direct object (object) follow


action verbs and tell who or what.
For example;
Oka loves playing video game. (playing
video game as direct object)
The students in this class like learning
gerund. (learning gerund as direct
object)

Gerund as subjective complement is


usually preceded by to be which located
between subject and subjective
complement.
For example;
My favorite activity in pleasure time is
cooking.
Her best talent is singing.

Gerund as predicate nominative follows


linking verb.
For example;
Dasi gives working all of his energy and
time.
Arya gives learning all of his time.

Gerund as apposition or it gives a


confirmation in a sentence.
For example;
My hobby, running, keeps me in a
health condition.
My favorite activity, fishing, needs a lot of
patient.

Gerund as compound noun means an


equipment.
For examples;
swimming pool,
swimming suit,
drawing book,
washing machine,
dining table,
waiting room,
living room, etc.

Gerund after word NO is used as a ban.


For example;
No Smoking!
No Fishing in this area!

If you want to put a verbal after possessive


such as my, our, your, it should be a
gerund or act as a noun.
For example;
Thank you for your visiting.
I am sorry for my coming late.

Gerund after preposition is always follow


preposition and are in phrases. There are
many kinds of preposition such as; for, before,
about, in, of, from, by, without, to, on, after,
etc.
For example;
Moniq will need a good brush and color for
drawing picture .
Before leaving, I locked the door.

Gerund is used after special verbs such as;


admit, avoid, consider, delay, deny, discuss,
enjoy, finish, keep, postpone, recommend,
regret, risk, suggest, tolerate, etc.
For example;
He avoided coming late to university.
Mary denied knowing anything about
crime.
